I went to a small lake nearby and dug out the bottom of it in an 8x8 square, over 20 blocks deep... but I've never yet seen even one squid spawned in it. I've left it for a while and there's no other water in a fair distance from it, either.
As far as I know they still work. Since we are pre 1.8 they should spawn between layers 45 and 63. However keep in mind that once 1.8 arrives any new maps will have various different sea levels, but are still usually around the 60 range.
Diging a deep hole in a lake doesn't always make a better area for squid to spawn, as I said they spawn between 45 and 63, so if your lake started at layer 60, was already 10 deep, and you dug another 20 (10+20 = 30 deep water), they are only going to spawn at layers 45 through 63. Since in our example lake it started at layer 60 and we dug it to layer 30, we actually have 15 layers that squid can't spawn in but can swim in. In our version also squid are notorious fro swimming down, and will pool at deep layers. In 1.8 squid can freely swim in any direction. Point is you would be better to make the lake 'bigger on the x,z axis, with 3 to 5 in depth so you can easily see within it, and make sure you are at least 24 blocks away from the lake as they also follow the general spawn rules.
Oh yeah, I should've said I made sure of the height and all. I found the height and stuff from the wiki. I've actually made 4 of them in my world now and filled in all the water anywhere near them... and have still gotten zero squid in any of them. >.< I followed two youtube videos exactly for two of them, dug out that lake in one, and made one completely from scratch and I'm getting nothing.
I've killed a few out in the ocean, but that's slow and boring. I'm to the point where I'm just raising black sheep instead. lol I'd still like to figure out the problem for future reference though because i haven't even seemed to have any even spawnin there so far. It's kind of driving me nuts. XD
Are u playing on peaceful? If so try switching the difficulty playing for a few mins and they switching back to peaceful. I found when I played on the 360 that sometimes a switch was needed to kick start spawning.
Secondly, do you have a lot of dogs or cats? Keep in mind that the console version has limits, although I'm not entirely sure what limit squids belong to, if you have a lot of captive animals try reducing your numbers to see if that causes them to spawn. I'm just grasping at straws here, but its better to try things then completely give up.
Also something changed a few TU's ago (when we got witches) which changed the spawn rates, I used to be able to go from 0 to 30 within a endermen farm that had 14 floors each with 64 spawn pads for a total of 896 spawn spaces in less then 2 minutes. Since that update endermen are slow to trickle into the farm, and it takes me at least 5 to 10 minutes to get to level 30, most of my other mob farms also seem to be experiencing this slowdown as well. Thing to keep in mind with my farms is that I am for as high as efficency as I can, thus I provide as much air space, as well as blocking all spawn spaces outside of the farm within 128 blocks of the farm, and thus the only place for them to spawn is within my farm. Anyhow slightly off topic but still related.
I was recently at my squid farm and it also has significantly reduced rates, but it is working none the less, however I should note that this is on the xbox one.
No, I'm on normal. There could be a lot of dogs and cats, I haven't really taken any notice of them as I'm running around. I thought water creatures had their own spawn tables, but maybe not. I'll try thinning all the animals a bit.
I have around 7 sheep and a couple cows, I think. I made sure the squid farms are all quite a distance from my house and from each other. Maybe it's something with the world I'm on. I'll try making a new one and see if they spawn there.
