Hi all. So I've been reading around the forums trying to get an answer but I haven't come up with anything definite. So I have an ocean survival world I'm trying to get animals on. Most of the biomes are mooshroom, which I know you can't get cows, sheep, pigs, or chickens on. However there are some Islands which are decent sizes but animals don't spawn. The island which you spawn on is at least 16 by 16, or at least close to. I was reading somewhere that in some areas even though it's just a tiny island, if it has trees naturally it is technically a different biome such as hills or something. All I know is all this biome talk is confusing me lol.
The seed is NOTCH. I believe i am using the latest update as well. If anyone can help me out id greatly appreciate it!
Not sure if this would work, but maybe try enlarging islands with extra dirt you have? If you can make shears, you can make a regular cow from a mooshroom, other than that, I dunno.
Some survival island maps do have areas in them that are actually parts of other biomes. If they occur on your seed, you'll likely find them near the outermost edges of the map (which is where these other biomes would have started if the map were larger, say, on PC). They don't even have to have any land in them... For example, you can look for a swamp biome by finding lily pads floating on the ocean and Taiga or tundra if you spot frozen water. You can also test for other biomes by silk touching some grass blocks and placing them in on the ocean and noting the color it turns. If it comes up brown, that's a desert but bright, bright green would indicate a jungle. If you do spot one of these other biome areas on your map, try laying down a grass isle that is larger than one chunk square (i.e. larger than 16 x 16) and wait a short distance away from it for a bit. Animals should then start to spawn there as well.
Okay so I have one more question. So I decided to try that, but instead of looking for ice or lily pads, I made a creative world with the same seed, took a grass block, and surrounded the entire perimeter of the map with grass blocks to see if there would be any change in color. I started at the top right corner and went around the map counterclockwise to see if there is any change in color. The only change in color there was was in the desert, & I know that things cannot spawn there. So I finished up and eventually got back to the top right corner, and when I got there a sheep was standing on the grass perimeter! Does this mean perhaps the top Right corner is Hills / plains?

I would say yes if it spawned a sheep in creative mode - It's another biome that has the same color grass as the ocean one... so lay down some silk touched grass in that area in your survival world and you should get some animals to spawn.

I got a sheep to spawn! One last question, if i take the animal to an artificial platform that is technically ocean biome, and fence him in, will he disappear?
I built the space and i actually got the sheep to spawn!

No, he should not despawn IF you put him in a proper pen that is less than 20 x 20 and feed him wheat when you first get him there. For best results, try to get two or more to follow you there and breed them right away to produce an offspring "born" in the new location... and then, if you do lose one, immediately breed the remaining ones again to keep their numbers up.

You will want a couple of grass blocks wherever you move the sheep, their wool won't regrow unless they have access to grass.
Animals will spawn on any grass block except those within an Extreme Hills or Mushroom biome. Extreme Hills will spawns chickens, however. The Wiki claims that passive mobs cannot spawn on the small islands located in Ocean biomes, but I've seen evidence to the contrary.
I would just use dirt to extend whatever island you call home. Once it's covered in grass it should start spawning mobs.

i have tried that multiple times - never with any success.

The reason extending your island doesn't work is because it's still an ocean biome. For some reason small islands usually are still classified as ocean. Self created land mass is also going to still be ocean and only hostile mobs can spawn there.
apparenty some of the outer edges of the map will be water, but are actually other biomes. This I did not know about, so that's cool.
as for getting more animals, don forget you need to be a small distance away for them to spawn(also again, you need a biome that supports them)
So this little patch of other biome I've talked about before actually has and does spawn some animals. So far it has spawned 3 sheep and two pigs (I already have cows through mooshroom shearing so that isnt a concern of mine) now im just waiting for at least one chicken.
The biome is a strip of grass that is slightly brighter than the ocean biome grass, and its about 18x2/3, it varies as you go along it. Its attached to a little artificial island thats mainly for looks i suppose.
I find it odd though that no chickens have spawned yet, since ive heard alot that they're usually the first to do so. Is it just bad luck? Or is there something about the biome that makes them not spawn? I mean if sheep and pigs can spawn chickens should too, right?
As for livestock spawnig in ocean biomes.. It's not possible. If anyone is interested in ingame confirmation of this look in custom superflat biome descriptions. Which is actually pretty interesting.. in there is tells which biomes will spawn animals and which do not.

You can get cows also by shearing mooshrooms.

Some of these answers are a bit, um... erroneous.

Nevermind, I got my chicken c: and a wolf! I wasnt expecting that.
Grats on the chicken and wolf..
