When an iron golem does not attack hostile mobs around him it generally means hes tracking something else that you can't see because its behind a wall or under ground. BloodyPhoenix is right however that they will not tangle with creepers. So if your using your iron golem for a guard, its best to make sure there are no nearby caves that baddies could spawn in which would cause your iron golem to track, then when other baddies are nearby the iron golem will ignore them even though they are much closer because it already has a target. Golems do NOT need LOS (Line of sight) to track its target.

Iron Golem some time not killing hostile mobs
They won't attack Creepers, so unless they're ignoring other hostile mobs, they're fine.
Stay fluffy~
