Using the one village island survival seed (TITLEUPDATE24) and came back from farting around in caves, gathering ores and whatnot. Got the Villagers to breed 2 more, a Blacksmith and Librarian in which I already made the blacksmith and was going to work on a library. Well came up during a snow/rainstorm, no worries, made it to the village......EVERYONE WAS GONE! Just like that, all the work disappeared trying to populate a village as they died or whatever for unknown reasons......
Probably a zombie siege took place while you were away (but still close enough for mobs to spawn in the village). All is not lost, however, you can still "cure" zombie villagers. Approximately 5% of zombies spawn as zombie villagers; and you can cure them by feeding them a golden apple while under the effects of a potion of weakness. Is it easy to do... no; but it is an alternative to starting the seed over.
However, you're probably not too far along in your survival island world and you now do have an idea of where some things are... so that might be a better alternative. This time... stay far away (farther than 128 blocks) from the village until you have the resources to make at least 30 doors (and whatever structures you want to support them). That way, you will quickly breed up to 10 villagers and an iron golem will spawn to help protect them. You can also devise ways to make their "homes" so that zombies are less likely to spawn in the house with the villagers.
I "may" have figured out my issue. I altered the blacksmith a little (using template from the wiki) as I wasnt able to collect lava (for whatever reason) and removed the top part over the lava and used stairs for looks on bottom. It is now a reasonable assumption that they are absolute idiots where one fell in and the other 3 went in after him to save him (will try and make their alleged stupidity look noble)
It sucks, but is what it is and yah was towards he beginning of the survival deal so not a colossal deal, just sucks as I will start over and regather alot of the materials. At least I have a better idea of the caverns and where a couple diamond locations are.May make the enchanting table first with them after I build a library. Will keep me busy topside where I can keep a better eye on these nimrods lol
Only took 3 houses I think i was with 3 doors each to reproduce 2 more. Kinda blows as they spawned a blacksmith and a librarian, 2 of what I wanted to see (priest is the other)
What I've learned about villagers since they were introduced: They are complete idiots that can and will die with no exceptions, even when boxed in.
True - one's only real defense is to get the numbers of village doors up to a level where they automatically breed to replace their losses. Even then a zombie siege can wipe the village out... but it is less likely with a golem or two on patrol. My one iron golem farm has 5 x 5 pods with water flowing on the floor such to keep them towards the centre of the space. I haven't noticed any losses in the pods for some time now. Not sure if the baby villagers would drown now... they didn't when I first built the farm.

I was building a blacksmith and some other stuff and as I was walking back to it, I saw a villager jump up into the lava and burn himself up. So your theory holds water (or lava, as the case may be). Best of luck getting everything up and running. Part of the fun, right?

They are idiots but it isn't that hard to keep them alive. Set up a controlled environment free of lava, cactus, long drops, pointy sticks and that can only be entered by the player. I find it useful to place them in a trading booth and keep them in a minecart. The minecart keeps them from running around and it also can be used to transport them to the villager "retirement village" if their trades become undesirable (the "retirement village" might not be nearly as secure).
I don't think it was a zombie siege that killed his villagers, as in order for a siege to take place he must have at least 10 houses (doors), with the village population being at least 20. Its fairly easy to defeat a zombie siege once you know how they take place, and what rules are ignored when the siege takes place. That said however, they are not the easiest to defeat when they are taking place, especially on hard mode and early game.
I personally don't try to save default generated villages, in fact i usually murder them. Much later in the game I will cure my own villagers and use them as I see fit, where some will be imprisoned for trading if they have good trades, and the others are shipped out to an iron farm or mob sorting system, however everyone likes to play the game differently. They are nothing more then tools to an end in my eyes, where others view them as kinda company and companions.
I am definitely leaning on the mismade blacksmith, since then I havent had a villager die and a couple more have been made.
Normally I dont care about villages, but this particular seed intrigued me as to creating my own village and populating the island. I havent gotten to potion making yet, just learning about crafting and enchanting now lol.

Then comes the time to break the mine cart and you hit the moron instead. Or you're fighting off a zombie nearby and it calls for help, spawning a zombie in that one very spot where the moron is help captive....
You could try to revive them, but, just for future reference, try building a wall around it using useless blocks (dirt, gravel, cobblestone). The only entrance should be a ladder going over the wall so nothing can get in or out, except of course the player. Also I recommend putting torches all around and inside the village and blocking off caves.

Yeah, that happens. I have my villagers with good trades in one of my base's sub basements. My base is safe from hostile mobs.
I am redoing the 'village' to my own building preferences, perhaps I can lock them behind counter with fence, only ale to go behind counter and their bedroom (which I will furnish)
I do hear people talk about good trades they offer. As I never really traded with them prior to like last night (where my cleric offered an iron pickaxe with efficiency then iron chestplate with another enchant that escapes me) Which would be the good/best trades for the different occupations?
I did look on wiki, but seems the list they had is not consistent to what I have experienced on the 360
IDK how old this post is, but my suggestion is to build a wall around this village. It might take time, i know it wouldn't really change anything, but at least it helps respond to villagers under attack alot quicker and giving you time to fight back. I built a wall around a village i built my house in, so any villagers that are in need of being saved, I wasn't far to save them.
I know i sound like a nerd, but sounds good if you ask me.
Its only a few days old, but the problem was when I was cave diving and came back during the day. Nobody was around. I usually sleep at the first glimpse of the moon when monsters arent around, so saving wouldnt have been an issue

PC trading has changed from what we have. Here is a link from the wiki that covers our system (the old PC system) http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Trading/Before_1.8
That does look more accurate. Wish we had a 360 wiki for this....
