Ok, as I am in my first survival game, I just came across a vein of diamonds (4 at least, had to make an iron pickaxe). What would you suggest I make with these diamonds, including waiting if I need more?
Also, what good is the gold for? I heard it has horrid durability, so hesitant on making anything yet.
Yeah, a diamond pickaxe is usually the first thing I use diamonds for - to get obsidian... to make an enchanting table. You'll also need 2 diamonds for the enchanting table. BTW, the pickaxe takes 3 diamonds.
Gold's primary use in single player is making powered rails, and can also be used to make glistering melons for health potions, golden carrots for consumption or night vision/invisibility potions, golden apples for consumption, clocks, light weighted pressure plates, pointless trading with villagers, gold blocks for building or constructing a beacon base, powering said beacon, or tools and armour, which have the highest mining speed and enchantability, though the latter is more for the sake of trophies or if you've got nothing else in PvP.
Also, try using the wiki. It can answer a lot of questions concerning a specific item.

I personally went for the enchanting table first. I gathered what I need to build a room to enchant my tools. Strip mined for more Diamonds, then enchanted when I was ready.
After the enchanting table, make your first diamond pickaxe a Silk Touch/Eff/Unb -- this allows you to pick out all those odd ores, store them and bust them apart when you need the ores & orbs. Make your second diamond pick a Fortune III/Eff/Unb for maximum effect when you bust 'em.

I do peruse the wiki, but seems most is structured more on the PC version plus doesnt give advice from far more experienced players than myself.

Diamonds are for hoes.
Use the enchantment table to put a 30 on your diamond pickaxe, and use that to get more diamonds.
Use them in this order:
Pickaxe
Enchanting Table
More pickaxes (to fix the ones with good enchantments)
Then a jukebox and play Cat on repeat.
I will have to check that disc out, since I have seen it a million times in those chests in deserts

It's widely considered one of the best discs... for good reason.
I play with the music turned completely off, but on occasion I turn it back on to listen to a music disc or two.
