Hello everyone, I'm a new Minecraft player. I don't really know much of the ins and outs yet. I've been reading a lot about mob farming and I've just been very confused as of late. I made one in survival a week ago and got kind of frustrated when it wasn't spawning that much monsters (only around 1-5) and it was very slow. Then I read somewhere that you will have to clear the cave systems under your mob grinder and make sure all of them are lit up.
Can someone enlighten me a bit by answering the several questions I have...
I read somewhere that I need to light up all the cave systems under my mob grinder. How far from the center of my mob grinder do I need to clear? And how far under? How high and how many levels can I build my mob grinder for it to be efficient?
Well tu25 is out but it shouldn't change much on this depending on what kind of mob spawner it is depends on what design you use if it's a zombie I would be very careful making it into grinder the little zombies tend to sneak out
It depends upon which kind of mob grinder you are using if you are building off of a actually spawner or a dark room trap where you just make rooms with water flows to collect the mobs. If you use a real spawner its alot eaiser because they have a separate mob count from the rest of the world so you dont need to light up the caves. But if you use a dark room trap you could either light up all the caves for i thinks its like 120 blocks around or you can just build a ladder up 120 blocks from the ground and build the trap up there so that the chunks below are not rendered when you are standing at your grinder
I know they are in caves, I may have misinterpreted in the 'use' of the spawner, as in collecting it and putting in a room you create, say in basement of house.

No, they can't be collected. You have to use them where they are found.

most hostile mobs in the Overworld will automatically despawn if they are 128 blocks away from the player. So typically you want to torch up any space where mobs can spawn within 128 blocks of your mobs grinder. So you will want to light up all the caves and above ground within 128 blocks.
You can avoid the tedious task of lighting everything up by building your mob grinder in the sky. towered up over the ocean in my first world, I went up 150 blocks (the required 128 + an additional 22 so that they drop from the grinder with reduced health for a 1 hit kill.) With this method you should find that if you build an AFK platform to activate the grinder you will return to a nice collection of mobs ready to harvest.
By far the easiest way I have found is to build a sky spawner. Start by pillaring up 150 blocks above the ground. At the top of the pillar build an 11 x 11 platform, then surround the whole thing with fences to keep yourself from falling off. From the center block of the 11 x 11 platform, pillar up another 25 blocks. Then make a 5 x 5 platform, centered on your pillar. I would suggest you make the 5 x 5 out of dirt since it's temporary, Then build out 6 blocks in every direction from the center, giving you a 17 x 17 platform. Build 2 high walls surrounding the whole platform and put a half - slab roof on it. Finally, place 16 signs around the 5 x 5 opening in the center where the dirt was. Dig back down to the 11 x 11 platform and you're done. Just stand there and wait for the loot.

How do you use a spawner? I thought they werent available in the console versions and can only be summoned in PC?
