In one of my maps I've encountered a number of Blaze waiting for me as I return from the Nether. It started with only 1 greeting me. This wasn't a problem. However, then 2 were waiting and promptly killed me upon my return. I'm paving over the Nether and usually do this unarmored as I'm using Invisibility and Night Vision Potions there. So, lesson learned I now return with armor on. This last time there were 6 Blaze waiting for me!
I'm familiar with Pigmen coming through but did not know Blaze would come through. Is this common, seen before? I have three other worlds and I have never had a Blaze waiting for me in those. Their greeting party seems to increase as the paving project advances. The SW quadrant is completely paved. I'm wondering if it is related.
A note on my Nether portal. It generated in the middle of a Nether fortress. Seed: 1, Nether Portal coord -14, 68, 119 - 122. Access to one side of the portal is blocked by a fortress wall. My base inside the fortress is well lite and half slabbed.
I'm interested in stopping the Blaze from coming to the Overworld. After a long day paving Hell I don't need the hassle. Ideas?

Mobs can enter your nether portal and travel to the other dimension. I must say though that I have never had anything but pigmen spawn or come through my nether portal, but if you are slabbing the fortress, it's possible that you are limiting the blaze spawn to the area around your portal, resulting in them wandering inside and being teleported.
I believe it was a combination of slabbing and the positioning of the portal in the fortress. I'm guessing the Blaze were spawning in the portal itself, or that small space between the portal effect and the wall. After spawning they were sent to the Overworld. They had very few places to spawn otherwise and I guess it's dark in that little sliver.
I have since dug out the wall on the other side of the portal, lite and slabbed it over. No Blaze in the Overworld since. Probably not a very effective Blaze farm... I prefer not to receive incoming.
