I have never really considered updating Minecraft on Xbox because I really enjoyed the older updates. If I were to install the new updates now, would my current files be erased?
They should not be erased... however, some people have reported issues with their files becoming corrupted and/or "resetting" to the default terrain for that seed (as it is in the current update). It's wise to backup/copy your files to an alternate device (i.e. USB or the cloud). You can do this using the main Xbox dashboard feature... just be sure that your are signed in with the same gamertag that created each world (the "owner" of that file should be shown under the file size indication when you get into the list of Minecraft files).
To copy to a USB, you will first need to format the USB correctly for the Xbox (can be done right on the Xbox, again using the main dashboard and instructions are on the Xbox Live website).
