I have been trying to increase the number of villagers I have by building "phone booths" consisting of a single ceiling block surrounded by four doors that (hopefully) count as four houses each. The problem is a field of phone booths looks ugly, and the villager keep opening and closing all those doors, which is driving me bananas.
Now I thought I heard somewhere that glass does not affect sunlight falling on the ground, so I decided to rebuild my phone booths below ground level with a floor of glass blocks on top. What I hope is that the phone booths will remain valid houses, under the glass.
Does anyone know if this is true?
Will my phone booths remain valid houses under a glass floor or will they become invalid?
Minecraft Wiki says:
A valid door is any door within the city radius where the number of "outside" spaces within 5 blocks in a straight line on one side of the door is not the same as the number of "outside" spaces within 5 blocks on the other side of the door. A space is considered to be "outside" if it has nothing but transparent blocks above it all the way to the sky.
From the wiki, it sounds like you should be ok as long as the only thing above is glass, since it is transparent. Your only issue is if you have isolated your villiagers. The have to be able to mingle so they can breed.
Personally, when I breed villiagers, I lock them up in a house with an Iron door, so they dont open and close it, and place a ton of doors on the roof or around the outside of the house.
good luck!
