I was just wondering because I dont know the details of spawning. I can't find any chickens though I hear the occasional one and I'm trying to set up a farm for eggs. I was wondering the easiest way to do this and I figure it involves creating an large empty pen in a field and hoping for the best for spawning them.
Not a bad idea, just make sure you fence it off into 20x20 pens, so that chickens that spawn don't despawn later. I have a problem with chickens getting stuck in the corners. I feed them into love mode, but they won't leave their corners, not even to breed (insert joke here). To get them to breed, I had to subdivide my pen into small pens so they were already on top of each other before... (joke #2 here).
If you can hear chickens, they're around. Try looking in jungles. They will spawn there, but it's easy to miss them. Ocelots sometimes kill them quick, too. Their render distance seems to be shorter than other mobs, so criss-cross your plains biomes to find them. Also, kill all the sheep/pigs/cows you find, to open up more space for chickens to spawn. I think (not sure) that chickens have a separate cap, but naturally spawn as a part of the overall passive mob spawn limit. Check your mountain biomes for lone mobs on ledges. Check holes for mobs that fell in. Save up your eggs to make more chickens. I know they weren't popping out chicks before the bug fix, but maybe it's fixed now.
There are Chickens, but you need to find them. They will follow you if you have Wheat Seeds in your hand. Lure 2 Chickens into a pen and feed them the Seeds. They will breed and produce a baby Chicken which will eventually grow up. Repeat this process every 5-6 minutes until you have enough Chickens. You can also collect all the Eggs from the pen and throw them into the pen. There is a small chance of hatching a baby Chicken from any Egg you throw. So that can help you increase your Chicken population a little bit faster. But if you want the farm for Eggs, this is counter-productive in the very beginning. Good luck!
I thought eggs only made chickens on the PC via mod? I didn't think it worked on the xbox360. That passive mob thing could be part of the problem as well though cause I didn't know there was a cap. I didn't think it would be this hard to locate them but I'm used to the infinicraft string on the PC version. Working with a fixed map dimension sucks lol.
