I have an oldish world I started on creative a while ago, though can't remember which TU it was. It's a flat world I was using to create some games on. I built a series of rooms with various challenges which ultimately lead to an arena in the centre. When I went on it last night in adventure mode every room was full of mobs. As I killed them, more and more kept spawning in front of me. I thought mobs only spawned a certain distance away, or has that changed now? I haven't noticed the same thing in survival.
I opened both a superflat and a regular world that have spawn control in them, and both actually spawned very few mobs in the spawn areas which I built for them. If anything, Adventure Mode seems to have decrease spawning for me.
I'm going to test it again tonight and put it in peaceful then switch back to survival and see if it happens again. The only thing I can think of is that it was similar to when zombie hoards sometimes attack in a village and they rapidly spawn in close proximity. There is a village not too far from the thing I built, approx 50 blocks away maybe. Possible it could be that perhaps? I have only actually seen the zombie hoard once before and that was when I loaded up a world in a village and a load of zombies spawned in the villager house I was in. I remember on that occasion though the zombies completely ignored me as they were more interested in the villagers, so I took a photo and posted it elsewhere (can't remember which thread off hand) but this particular flash mob definitely wanted my blood. I managed to fend off two of them with a door I happened to be carrying, but my demise was swift!
If it was zombies, they have a chance to spawn another zombie when you attack one. The new zombie spawns right by the one being attacked. This is a new feature added in TU19. Other mobs shouldn't do this.

Zombie sieges occur when you have at least 20 villagers in a single village. The zombies that spawn for the siege will spawn regardless of light level, and can spawn on half slabs as long as the block underneath the slab itself is solid. also, the sieges will only start at 12 pm midnight in the game.
I am actually considering making a zombie style adventure survival village game now with the sieges finally working. I do wonder whether or not it is possible to have more than one siege take place at a time though.
this sounds fun like a battle room. you should make it into a fight to the death map lol
The idea is that you spawn in a chamber with minecarts. Four players each get into their own cart which takes them to a starting point, one on each quarter of the arena. You progress individually through a series of challenge/puzzle rooms such as parkour, mob room, etc. Each room will have items stashed in it to collect such as food, armour, weapons, potions, etc. Then everyone finally emerges into the central arena for a fight to the death. In the centre is an enchanting table, so it's advantageous to progress through the rooms as quickly as possible in order to get to the table first to enchant your gear and then wait for the latecomers. The rooms will have easily accessible chests but also some chests which are much harder to get to or find but will contain better gear. Still a bit to do on it yet but when I have built some more i'll post some images and maybe get some people in to play test it?
