Well, whats on the memory stick? If you take one of your worlds, it wont be compatible. I dont know that you can transfer updates either... His console will need to connect to the internet at some point to get the update. I've done it before when i didnt have internet. I took my console to a freinds house, hooked it up, and downloaded updates.

The memory stick is not the issue here... but trying to open a world on an older version of Minecraft than the most recennt update it has ever been opened with is the issue. Once you open an world with an updated version, then you cannot open it with any earlier version or you will corrupt the data. There is no backwards compatibility between versions of Minecraft.
Some way, some how, your friend's Minecraft will have to be updated BEFORE you attempt to open any of your worlds with his Minecraft... and you will have to be sure to also then be up to date with him before you try to put your worlds back onto your own Xbox and open them with your version. As Phoenix say, if you're both on TU20 (which is the most recent update), you should be fine.
Also, do not attempt to copy, move or open your world to any from his machine using any other profile than your own.

Technically... that's "There's no Forward compatibility between versions of Minecraft"
Backwards Compatibility is the ability for newer hardware and applications (later game versions) to be able to handle older data/files (older worlds).
There are many people who are still playing older worlds on the current version of MC... but like everyone said, you can't do the reverse and run a newer world on an older version of Minecraft. (Nor Older Worlds that were last saved in a Newer Version either).

Just take the update with you on the usb. Transfer it to your friends xbox so he has it, then re-download it yourself when you get home. I know for a fact this works and doesn't violate any policies.

Sorry for my lapse in terminology.
