...or lack of! I wish there was a way you could have different sized portals. I build my house and get things looking reasonably nice. Then I come to build my nether portal and realise that because everything is based upon a central door, the portal placement always throws off the symmetry of the design. I never think things through properly in survival as i'm sure a lot of people don't. It's survival after all, and you work with what is to hand. Then so far down the line you realise that you haven't taken something into account as you add to your house. I'm curious though what other people do with their nether portals? Where do you put them? Do you hide them or make a feature out of them?
Usually they have their own area. I have one in my Superflat survival that is off-centre. I remedied it by hiding one side so it looks only one wide. Fortunately we'll get expandable portals eventually.
I usually put them in a separate room with a door (aka - closet) - if only to keep pigmen from wandering all over the house if they spawn there. I also recess them into a double block wall so that the base and top are part of the ceiling and floor and the side frame is flush with the adjacent walls on one side and not visible from the other. I can then hide the visible side parts with paintings This makes the portal usable from only one side, but all you ever really see is the active particle effect. I've honestly not tried covering the actual portal part with a painting... hmmm, I wonder if it would still work... ETA: Just tested it - paintings, it seems, will not form over the portal part, but, as I said, you can at least cover and hide the obsidian frame with paintings.
You can make a portal that is an odd length by making two portals side by side that share the center obsidian column, that way you could still maintain symmetry. The two portals would be a total of seven blocks in length.

Ahh, good thinking batman. I like the idea of that, could look quite unusual.
In my survival/creative map I just made a temple of it using the portal as the center point.
The last 2 were symmetrical to a degree, as there are bits not mirrored on certain axis along the outer edge. I really don't worry too much on the symmetry of the whole thing, I just make it look like it either belongs or in the very least looks good to my taste.
A lot of my stuff I build are both Asymmetrical and Symmetrical in the same build. I just got by what looks good to myself.:)

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Stay fluffy~

In my 2nd major map I built a tower around it.
