I've been trying to find an RPG server and failing miserably. I've started to entertain the idea of just starting my own but since I've never actually made it into one I'm not sure what separates a great server from a poor one. I'm looking for some input, what would you like to see in an RPG server? What makes you enjoy playing in one and what makes you quit?
1.) Have a story. Just going with "We're this, now act the part" won't cut it. Put some effort into a short story line that'll compel people to join. Leaving it open-ended that will ultimately be decided by the players will help them become involved.
2.) If it has currency, it's probably be best to keep it all virtual in an Excel document, unless theft is part of the theme, that is. Online currency cannot be stolen or replicated by any means.
3.) Put the rules on the post. Don't say crap like, "Read the rules when you join." People like me want to know beforehand if there are any more unique rules.
4.) If it's tarnished by Creative, make it for a good reason. Some people don't want to play a fresh world that has leaderboards disabled just so the host can fly around. One thing that I did was add more ores and little oddities throughout caves in one world. You never knew what you'd find when exploring!
5.) If there are jobs, don't make them stupid or restrictive. No-one wants to stand in a store for hours on end or not be able to make tools because they aren't the right job. Think of jobs like Fantasy Life: Everyone can do everything, but the specific job gets benefits towards it. Say non-lumberjacks can use stone or maybe iron at best, but lumberjacks can use anything.
6.) Set up a schedule, and make sure to include your time zone. Knowing when a world will be online helps maximize people being on.
7.) You'll meet idiots and stupid crap will happen. Make at least on backup copy of the world after each session so that you can undo any messes. A USB drive isn't expensive at all.
8.) Optionally, have people do more than just toss a name out to join. Making them read the whole post and answer specific questions regarding it and the rules will draw in more active people since they won't be joining just to kill time, but to actually play in the map.
What makes me quit:
-The host being an idiot or abusing privileges when applicable.
-Inactive or sporadic hosting.
-People who are hard to get along with.
-Unreasonable rules.
