Now that the Wither has been added to console, I'm on my way to getting those three wither skelly heads. But I just thought about creating the wither. And then I thought about it's tendency to destroy everything in it's path. And then I thought about how small our worlds are... Now I'm kind of worried about spawning this thing. I wonder how much of the world it will destroy before I can stop it. I mean, we're talking about worlds that aren't even 1,000 blocks in either direction.
I'm going to suck it up and just do it. I'll let you guys know what happens. Has anyone else tried it in survival? When I spawned the wither on PC it has an entire world to roam in...
The Wither has been in the game since the last update. I spawned one in Creative mode when TU19 came out, just to test it's 'destructive power'. lol. It's not that bad, actually. If you don't spawn one near any large builds, the most you'll end up with is a number of small craters in the terrain, (similar to Creeper blasts). I spawned mine just outside a village, and the Wither did manage to destroy one corner of the Butcher's shop, put a hole in the roof of another house, and take out a small portion of the little wheat farm. Again, not nearly as bad as I expected.

Oops, sorry. I missed this part. No, I haven't gotten around to spawning one in Survival mode yet. I could be wrong, but I think the Wither mechanics have been nerfed on the consoles. Regardless, I would spawn one with the intention of fighting it, not allowing it to roam freely. That could be bad on 360. lol

Do not spawn the wither in your overworld. The wither is hostile towards anything that moves and it will destroy structures to get at its target. It can even destroy obsidian blocks with its blue skull, so there is no way to barricade it in somewhere and be 100% sure it wont get out. Even if you simply leave it to wander about in the wilderness on your map, there is always the possibility that you may run into it or it manages to find your shelter. Remember, safety first. So I recommend you build a wither in creative first and decide whether or not this is something you can, or want to handle.
The best solution is to make the wither in the nether. You can build it above the bedrock if you don't want the nether getting damaged, or you can simply reset the nether after you kill the wither, or if things go badly.
I like the idea of being able to reset the Nether but I'm worried about fighting in the Nether only because in battle it's hard enough just to focus on the fight. Now add watching where you step (thanks, lava)... forget it. I thought about spawning it near the ceiling of the Nether so it's head gets suffocated (thanks to Docm77 for that one). Of course, if I screw up...

You can fight it "Above" the nether as well though. All you need to do is use enderpearls to go through a thin point of the bedrock ceiling. Then you can use the trick with bonemeal and tree saplings to punch a 1x1 hole into the entrance/exit into the bedrock. It will usually incorporate a ladder to climb up and down the hole as well.
Note: don't save the game while you are above the nether until you manage to make your exit because once you go up there, there is no escape. XD
I've killed two withers in the overworld recently. One above ground in the desert and the other underground in a medium sized cave. The one in the desert was only problematic because I was getting stuck in holes it created and spent half the time jumping out of them. Other than that it wasn't that bad. Sure it's a lot tougher than the ender dragon, but it didn't get loose and go on a rampage. It was mostly focused on me. The underground fight was much easier honestly as it was mostly contained. Still knocked me around and broke a lot of blocks making holes everywhere. I'd recommend fighting it underground honestly.
Just...shove it in a hole sixty meters down. I spawned Wither after Wither in a modded PC world, and it took probably five or six before a sizable hole was blown out by them.
Can withers destroy obsidian? If not, what about a smallish obsidian room with a window to harass it through? I have three nether skelly heads pinned to my wall in my survival map with the intention of spawning one, but haven't dared yet! Is it really as hard as the ender dragon? I'm going to have to do it though as I need to make a beacon. Think i'll do it out in the desert too!

All of this is subjective... But honestly.. The ender dragon fight is pretty easy. The ender men are more of a threat than the actual dragon, he/she flies around in a predictable pattern and then comes down the same place to make itself an easy target for 10 seconds or so..
Now the Wither on the other hand can be a interesting fight depending on your gear. Potions are a must, I'd seriously recommend a good bow for the first half of the fight, a good sword for the second half. And a few splash potions of healing. If you're not prepared, the wither is not going to be easy.
Also, I'd advise against fighting in the desert. It's going to shoot skulls at you and blow holes in the sand that you'll be climbing out of the whole fight. Do in underground in a medium sized cave, or even a small one.. If the wither is contained it's not too bad.
As for the damage the wither does to the environment, I think people are overreacting a bit here.. It's really not that bad. Sure you want to fight it away from anything you've built, but other than that it will destroy some blocks and knock you around a bit..but it's not terrible. You'd do more damage with 4-5 tnt.. it's not that bad.
Well I finally spawned in a wither last night. I tried in the desert first, contrary to advice given. Yes, it is a bad idea as it now looks like the surface of the moon. I tried again after dying in one of my diamond branch mines. Managed to kill it pretty easily with a few hits from an enchanted sword and a strength potion. Unfortunately I died again because I took a hit and my health went grey and drained out. I finally did it by making a golden apple. I survived, but holy cow that was expensive,,,64 gold bars for the apple! Is there a cheaper way of surviving that greyed out health thing? Does a regen potion work?

The grayed out health, or the wither effect, is nasty.. Regen does work. I usually pop a regen during the fight, then a regular golden apple after than runs out. BUT the best thing is simply to drink a bucket of milk after the fight. It'll clear all effects on you. Including good ones.
I had the crazy idea of spawning it in a small cave at bedrock level with around 5 iron golems, not too close to it of course. I want to see if that helps out at all.

You can just build another nether portal up there, and it'll let you out. I don't think the sapling trick works.
Stay fluffy~

And yes, blue wither skulls destroy every block but bedrock. See the Wither's page for more info.
You must have tried this a few updates ago because it's definitely possible now.
