Making one extend is no problem- there's a example of how that works in the tutorial world.
But making one retract is a whole different ball game, especially if you're talking more than one block in length.
I'm with Zayne, I can't think of a way it can be done.
But, what you can do is have a chest filled with cobblestone handy and just manually build/destroy the bridge as needed. Not very elegant or automated, but it'll do the job.
Not retractable but the same idea: Dig a 2x# pit and put trapdoors at the opening to the pit. Redstone, connected to a lever, going all around will cause them to open and allow your victims to fall into a holding pen/death trap.
if i rember right (hasnt checked in ages) pistons can only move 7 blocks but sticky pistons can only move one block and retract one block so its semi impossible unless you got alot of sticky piston and redstone how large left to right foward and back are we talking here i can do some experiments to see if its possible
Any piston (sticky or otherwise) can push up to 12 blocks in a row... but will fail when trying to push 13 or more blocks.
The Sticky piston will only retract the block it is immediately attached to 'while it is retracting from it's extended state'.
A Sticky piston cannot retract blocks that have meta data or take up more that 1 block space (so a sticky piston cannot retract an extended piston, it can only retract an already retracted piston).
**** Grrr... forums just ate most of what I typed... I knew I should have copied that out to notepad.....****
To summarize, the logic is a lot more complex to retract the extension than it is to extend it in the first place, a better strategy is to extend and retract from the sides and opening in the middle... or use trapdoors similarly as Armyairsofter suggested.
20 blocks long by 2 wide over a high pit of sorts from a mountain to an edge
And I want to get it to pull all the way back to the house
I'm going to go back to sticky pistons can only push 12 blocks out, which means that you will have you bridge stick out a minimum of 8 blocks before expanding under the push pull design at best case scenario.
Now you could have it retract in 2 directions and meet int he middle for a 20 block span, but you would still have to have the redstone mechanism and logic in place out where the bridge would be to handle the expansion and contractions... which may be a problem for your aesthetics anyway.
hey bioh4z4d247, i sent you a message recently. I developed a sort of lava trap. Its not an extendable bridge, but it could work. Message back if you want to look at it In a flat world.

I know pistons have been buggy lately, as previously stated, but can we chain together sticky pistons? I'm obviously not on my console or i would just try and let you know. So if anyone wants to give it a go, cool. Or I will try when I can and let you know results. It would require some red-stoning that would need some well thought out placement and require activators, not just repeaters and what not. I dunno. Just thinking out loud.
Won't work. First block, fine. Next piston, repeater (on another block) has to move with the piston 1 block. Third piston, repeater has to move with it 2 blocks, and so on. That's bad enough, but how do you keep them all hooked up with redstone when/as they're extended and retracted?
The OP said: 20 blocks long by 2 wide over a high pit of sorts from a mountain to an edge And I want to get it to pull all the way back to the house.
There's a lot of things you can do in MC, but, sorry to say- this isn't one of them.
Me, I'm into the KISS principle. Build a stationary bridge and put an iron door on each end. Not as 'cool' as the OP is imagining, but effective.
The sticky pistons won't extend at all idk why

As several of us have tried to explain, it can't be done. I'd rethink your "wants".
