i have one xbox 360 console with 3 xbox live accounts on it. i have created a world on my account. when i am logged in, i can play with him with a split screen, but he cannot play in my world by himself in my world. i set up my world in survival mode, selected online game, checked the "invite only" option, and invited his gamertag via the minecraft dashboard. when i log out of my xbox live account, then he logs in by himself into his xbox live account, then launches minecraft, i expect him to see my world in the minecraft menu. but he doesn't.
Nearly all the above. He can't play in your world unless you are signed on. (You can't play his worlds either). You don't need "online game" checked (you're not playing over the internet with another 360), nor "invite only" (just add him to your 'family members' list). Survival or Creative doesn't matter.
True- you can play together split-screen on your world.... as long as you're signed in.
But you do have 2 choices for him to play your world by himself:
1- Give him your signon and password so he can sign on as you. (I don't recommend that).
2- Sign in and walk away, basically letting him play (pretend) he's you. (I don't recommend that either).
You're best bet is the "True" option above.
OR he can make his own world to play on under his own Live account.
Yea, I know it sucks..... but welcome to the forum anyway!
So the only way for him to join my world solo is for me to get a second console? And then only if I am signed into my world and resting in my underwater home somewhere or something?
Yep, that pretty much sums it up. (If he wants to play full-screen on your world).
I know it's 1999ish, but the idea is to protect your world from things happening to it without your knowledge. I know in your particular case your world probably doesn't need much protection, but that's how it works anyway.
I get the reason for security, however, it seems like I should be able to set read/write permissions on my world. I'm inviting my 8 year old son to play, not Banksy...

Since you're wanting to play splitscreen, why not just set up a local profile on your Xbox that both of you can use (without the worries of him using your Live enabled profile) and then have that profile create the world. Then, whoever wants to launch the world can play as that player and the other one, if they want to also play can use their regular profile. You can make an agreement to dump your inventories into a chest before exiting the world so that nomatter what profile you play as, you start with nothing but can just collect your items when you re-enter. We do this all time in our household and, once you get used to the routine, it works quite well for offline worlds.
UpUp is right on. Just make another "common profile" that you all of you can use.
I didn't mention that because, as I read your post: 1- you guys didn't want to start a new world, and 2- he not only wanted to play when you're not around, but he wanted to play full-screen.
UpUp has the best long term solution. Bite the bullet, create the profile, and start a new world.

Thanks Geneo. I wanted to add that I agree that it would be nicer if 4J would change things so that people on the same console could at least share their worlds with each other. That would be the best long term solution. The above is really just a workaround.
That shared profile idea is a good one, UpUp. I thought of that, but really I want two of my kids to use their own gamertags and get accustomed to how the Xbox works. It'd be fantastic for Mojang to add a "shared online world" option. I know it could be all hell, but that would be a pretty fun option.
Thanks for your help.
