We have 6 named horses that have not despawned. I don't save or do anything before leaving them. I regularly take just one or a mine cart and go well over 200 blocks and have not had any issues. Without a name tag they always despawn. I have not done any save and exiting either way.

Did you tame them/break them or are they still wild/unbroken? I had a named wild horse that was completely penned-in/enclosed and tethered that did despawn.

I've only named tamed ones. I did not want to risk a name tag on a wild one, I had a bad feeling about it. lol To be fair though we've had a lot of luck getting name tags -for some reason we've found a lot of spawners since the last update.
