This appears to be similar to a known feature, so that you cannot mine outside of the edge of the world. However, this has altered game function after returning to anywhere else on the map.
I was underground and mining toward the edge of the world to show my son what would happen. As I approached the edge, I couldn't make contact with those edge blocks. All normal stuff so far. But when I returned in the other direction, I found that I can't break anything if I am not using the right tool. For example, I can break cobblestone only with a pickaxe, and I have to switch to my shovel if I run into gravel or dirt. The real problem is, there is no right tool to break a bed with, so I set my bed down to sleep in my tunnel, and I can't break it no matter what I use; if you don't already have an axe you can't break any type of wood, etc.
I should point out that this is happening everywhere, not just the edge of the map. It also began happening immediately on my son's screen (playing splitscreen). We've exited and re-loaded (unfortunately, we saved the game when we exited), but the problem remains.
I've been unable to duplicate this by loading a new world and mining to the edge in single player or splitscreen, so I don't know what caused it. But there doesn't seem to be any instance of this ever happening to anyone else. Does anybody have any thoughts? Suggestions?
P.S.

Sounds like your game mode changed from Survival Mode to Adventure Mode...you may want to check which mode you are set to when the game loads. Adventure Mode is a new TU19 game feature which prevents you from breaking blocks with the 'wrong' tool. but you can't start new worlds in Adventure Mode, they must first be created in either Survival or Creative and then exited and changed to Adventure Mode afterward.
PS. Not being able to break beds in Adventure Mode has already been documented.
It sounds like the game somehow thought that you switched from Survival to Adventure Mode. Make sure that it is in Survival when loading it next time, and if the problem persists in Survival, you'll need to report this to the bug thread.
