I'll do a little testing later and see what I can come up with . But I know it's mutual with Cats , Sheep , Pigs and Cows ...
Have you discovered anything yet? I seem to have maxed at 24 horses, a mule and a donkey. But I haven't tried breeding yet (since the mule), so maybe I can get some more. By mutual, do you mean that cats, sheep, pigs and cows and horses combine their totals into one cap?
Assuming that horses are counted in with mules and donkeys, the cap seems to be 25. I have 23 horses, a donkey and a mule now. If I kill off a horse, one will eventually spawn in a plains biome. But if I don't, no horse ever spawns.
Not sure about the mutual cap idea. I've tried cleaning up the stray critters, eliminating all tame cats and wolves and all but a pair of my sheep, chickens & mooshrooms, but it doesn't seem to affect the horse cap. I just get lots more pigs, chickens, sheep & cows spawning. But no horses.
My goal was to collect each of the 35 color variations, but I guess with a cap of 25 that's impossible. Too bad. It would have been a cool thing. The only hope is to somehow breed the missing variations. The wiki says 90% of the offspring will match the parents. But so far, after 30 attempts, it's been 100%. So much for mutation/recessive genes...
