Call me crazy, but I've finally become determined enough to build an Enderman farm on my survival world. I just finished my triple mob spawner setup (which works wonderful! 16 stacks of TNT already :D) So I'm on to my next project. I collected a double chest and a half of Ice over time and decided to put it to good use covering the end in water! While my girlfriend was sleeping, I spent 5 hours breaking the ice until the entire END was covered. Now, I decided to do some tests to see what level the mobs quit spawning in the end. Where I want to build the spawner is Y: 65, and the highest I got an enderman to spawn is Y:108 ( shouldn't it be 128?) anyways, 108-65= 43 blocks.. I need to drop the enderman 43 blocks to get a one hit kill, which means I will have to take the TNT I have and blow a hole through the END to get to the bottom of the end (which I think is about Y:5) and that will give me room for 15 spawn platforms. I got the number fifteen from: ..108-5= 103 total blocks. 103-43=60 blocks left for spawn platforms. Each platform is 4 blocks tall (bottom block with pressure plate + 3 high spawning space for enderman) and even though the top platform will go up to 112 I know the endermans feet spawn at 108. So. (43 + (4x15) + 5) = 108
What do you guys think about this? Do you think the enderman spawns will be slow? and do you think I've observed the spawn height incorrectly? How ambitious do you think this will be on survival? And what blocks would you use to build it? Thanks for reading!
I will just go on to say that I do not anticipate this to be my prime source of xp, I've got a dual blaze farm and my mob farm is actually an amazing source for xp. the reason is that I am in dire need of a source of enderpearls.
Well, building down in the End in Survival is tricky and risky... but it can be done.... I haven't tried the shifting floor/piston method for dropping MOB's but this might be your best bet for dropping them and may be easier than flooding the end with water in the long run.
i already made a enderman farm and works great if you want i show you mi farm.
What I did was from the farthest part of the island's End, make a straight line blocks to see where was the limit then drop water to make a pillar down until after I put a ground block to another line the corner of the island and did a platform to create the farm.
The level where I started if I remember correctly is Y = 2 and create 15 platforms spawneo for endermans.
In this new upgrade efficiency decreased but still up to level 30 in a time of 2-3 minutes.
I built sethblings poormans enderman farm(cheap, quick, & efficient pearls) and if u plan on keep the dragon alive like i have(although ur prolley not seeing that ur gna use it for xp?) U shud make it out of endstone bcuz the dragon cant break it(or obsidian). I think spruce and oak wood look good with the end stone and water combination. No idea what design ur using, so idk really. Just ideas from what was given to me.
Building in the end is easier than building in the nether bcuz theres no ghasts, and u know how it is in the nether seeing that u made a double blaze farm(seed plz? Lol)
Blow a hole through the end? I wanna see pics of that lol. I dont think its necessary since u have plenty of space from y64.
Mines not slow and u have the whole island watered up(i got mine torched up really well but not perfectly covered like urs prolley is).
Thanks for the replies! I've already covered the end in water. Step 2 is blowing a hole through the end. should be interesting! and If you're going to mine out the end I salute you sir. That is insane.. I will post pictures if anyone wants to follow, or even help!
Are they unreliable or is the placer too incompetent to place a sufficient number of them? I've made numerous Endermen farms with torches as the anti-spawner, all of which worked flawlessly.

In a way, yes. But I am definately incompetent tho....
Water blatantly shows which spots are covered. Torches to a dummy like me are kind of a guessing game. Ice is also cheaper and quicker to get than a sufficient bulk of coal/charcoal torches. Water also covers more blocks per unit, especially off of edges. The streams extend further if the 8 block length is interrupted with a cliff.
I've actually been playing offline the last 4 days and I had no idea that they released beacons and all that jazz. omg my life is complete. lol So I will get a beacon first and then I will chop a hole through the end Only problem is I have to reset my nether and my dual blaze spawner will disappear D:
I've built a couple ender man farms and I'd recommend a couple of things.. Most are common sense.
First, it looks like you covered the end with water.. This is really the best option. Torches are doable, but you can cover large areas of the island faster. And setting out a proper torch grid will take just as much time as covering with water. Also... Use the xray trick at different parts of the island. Sometimes there are pockets or caves that will reduce your spawn rates.
Second, use Panda4994's tripwire and normal piston design.. (One of the Zipkrowd guys)there are tons of different farms designs out there, but from what I've experienced this is the most reliable on consoles. The first farm I built I uses pressure plate and sticky pistons. It still works, but it has a couple of problems. Sometimes the pushed block gets stuck out in the extended position which renders a spawning spot useless until you go up there and fix it. That farm had about 19 layers, two rows of pistons about 30ish blocks long. Once in a while I would have to go up and fix about 10 or so spawning pads. It's not major, but can be avoided.
Also... Do not build above the old height limit.(y128) This will reduce your spawn rates. The way spawns and chunks are handled right now you'll get better rates starting your farm at y5 or lower. I usually pick the shortest portion of the island, drop down to y2 creating a column of cobble with water and lava and build there. If you plan to use TNT to blast a part of the island that could be fun too, but I'd recommend using one of the ends of the island and blast there.

Thanks anyway
