I want to play on my old world, but with some of the features of the new update!
-Will horses spawn in my old world from the new update?
-Can I fish for name tags?
-Can I get horse armor anywhere in my old world?
I sense a really snarky vibe coming from that comment.
Why don't you go play in a plains biome for a while, hmm?
One thing that might be throwing things off with very old worlds is biome shifts from previous updates... what looks like a plains biome may not actually be a plains biome any longer. You need to look carefully at the color of the grass to determine whether that location on your old map is currently a plains biome. Then, as I understand it (and I personally haven't accepted this update yet so I haven't personally tested it)... you need to wait in the area for a few day/night cycles since horses spawn relatively slowly compared with the other animals. You may also need to make sure that you have some room available in the animal spawn cap/limit for the world (not sure whether horses have their own cap or whether they count towards either the general animal count or the cap for wolves).
FYI, I don't have "old" worlds with lots of work invested in them (I don't fall in love with them). I restart new worlds all the time. In my current world I haven't even explored all of the first map... yet. After the update I stood at my house, built in the Plains, looked around and immediately saw 7 horses. I've traveled a little bit (to areas I've already explored) and seen dozens. So it's false that the large rats horses will only show up in unexplored areas.
It's also false, from what I've read, that name tags will keep horses from despawning. The despawning is a bug, and hopefully be fixed shortly.
Just like the "zombies dropping potatoes" flap a while back (which wasn't a bug, we just "expected" them too, so 4J changed it for us), people 'assume' that they "own" a horse once they tame it, so "owned" horses should never despawn. Only problem with that is, no one told the horse that. No one "owns" a horse, and though they're calling both "tamed", a 'tamed' horse is not the same as a 'tamed' wolf.
Maybe after the bug fix a horse w/lead tied off somewhere won't despawn, but I wouldn't expect any more than that. Until then, they're gonna despawn no matter what you do.
Ahhh, okay.
Yeah i've been reading around a lot that the horses will despawn. It'll be fixed soon i'm sure. Most bugs are fixed within about 2 weeks of the update.
And zombies are supposed to drop carrots/potatoes. Rare, but it happens.
Also, I just created a new world anywho.
I figured, new big update, new world. Why not?

In my testing, horses seem to be spawning in normally with other passive mobs... what I think other people are reporting is the fact that they are near their MOB cap in the areas they are in or generally just unlucky.... I've sprinted/flown in creative over a map and came across horse spawns and herds of horses in almost as soon as the chunk loads or shortly there after... and that was on an older world.

Thanks for testing that specifically. Do you think they share the overall mob cap with cows, sheep, and pigs... or are they perhaps sharing the cap with wolves? Wolves don't spawn at all in superflat, so if they share the cap with wolves, then they would theoretically spawn more freely in superflat worlds due to there being no competition for spawn slots.

I was in my creative superflat world, so there weren't any wolves to speak of... but horses didn't start spawning in right away, my guess is due to the number of other passive farm animals were around me... but as some of them despawned, I did start to see horses spawn in with more frequency. If I rapidly flew across the map, I'd almost say that horses seemed to be more common than other passive mobs...and occasionally spawned in entire herds of around 5-10 in one cluster...including foals on a natural spawn without planned breeding.

I've seen the same thing in regular plains biomes. Horses are everywhere. The naturally spawning foals are very cool, as are the many variations of breeds and colorations. I can't help but want to collect one of every kind and put them in a big barn. Does anyone know if the variations line up with the pc information on the wiki? Are there in fact 35 variations?
