Has anyone had a problem putting a saddle on? If not can you tell me how so I can continue trying to enjoy Minecraft again lol, am having problems saddling up a horse.. None will take it..
I had my horse with a saddle despawn on me in its pen when I walked away. Luckily I had recently saved so I was able to get it back. I assumed that it jumped out of the pen, so I tied it to the fence post with a lead to keep it from wandering. Of course I am assuming it simply jumped out of the pen and either ran off real fast or despawned, but I'm hoping that having it tied inside the pen should prevent this.
I tied my horse too... but it still despawned

first, you must tame the horse. after that you will press LT and looking at the horses buut or face, then you can saddle it and put armor in there slots

tested this on multiple worlds and it has been working.
after naming them and keeping them tied to a post inside a small pen, the horses have yet to despawn. we have 4 on one world right now and we have gone across the map, did some deep mining trips, rode other horses, etc. we played for hours and have yet to have a named horse despawn.
however, all other horses who were not named have disappeared into the bermuda triangle.
try this potential workaround and let me know if you are finding the same results
i found a really ****ty way to solve this I made a container of dirt 3x3with a roof, tied up my horse, named it, and left. yet as soon as it get back its gone. the lead is still on the fence post but when I try to pick it up it disappears. so to solve this i picked up another controller signed in as guest and set it down once iwas looking at the horse pen. this way they don't despawn but it sucks
This is probably the easiest method so far.
Also, donkeys and mules don't despawn once tamed.
The problem with mine was that a dog killed mine i was in the hose and I herd my horse getting hurt and I came out to my pen and a dog killed my horse it was tamed and everything
I lost two saddles before realizing the glitch. on my current journey down some line shafts I found a whole bunch of horse armor. Not going to put it jn a horse till the glitch is solved.
People have lost named horses/donkeys. So that may not be the simple fix...
I lost the first one that I had tagged with a name tag, that was penned up (actually boxed in on all sides) and tethered with a lead line... a second horse in that game that I put a name tag on and just stuck on a lead line did not despawn. I'm still trying to figure out if there are any consistent patterns or if it is just some anomaly for named horses by name tag or maybe just a random occurrence at times...

Ive been testing around aswell and i think it may be chunk related. If u could plz let me know what u find out it would be much obligued. I have a thread that i could find ur post in easier that i would like u to update me on what uve came up with.
Here I thought it was just me having issues with the de-spawning of horses. I tamed one, saddled it, placed it in a tiny area fenced in due to having this happen many times before after just taming a horse. I walk away to go cut some trees, a good feet away and I come back and poof. My horse was gone. I am hoping that if it is a bug, they fix it soon. in the mean time I will just make my world in the mean time with out taming such beautiful creatures.
Since all the theories about horses de-spawning are basically anecdotal guesswork at best, let me add my own experience/juju workaround.
I tamed a horse, saddled it, rode it around a while, got off and it de-spawned about five minutes later, after I had walked away.
I tamed another horse, saddled it, rode it around and put it in a pen (double thick, with double-wide gates). I saved the game and reloaded it. This horse has never de-spawned. I tamed a donkey, bred it with the horse, birthed a mule, grew the mule, saddled both of them and put chests (saddlebags) on both of them. Everything works fine, and none of these beasts has de-spawned, and I have traveled and gone about my business for hours at a time.
I remember the issue with villager babies getting glitched, and the suggestion to save it and reload it after having a birth, so that the baby will be fixed with an 'adult' space. Maybe the horse issue is similar somehow.
My world is a TU16 world, and the plains are spawning several herds of horses 3-4 each. They hang around for a good long while, too. Also, and maybe unrelated, I've noticed that wolves are spawning in fewer numbers since the update (fine with me).
I just found out something new. I thought the despawning of horses was chunk related, but its not. I put 2 horses in the same stable, one has never despawned and one that was the newer one despawned. Leashed, but no name tag for either. I can confirm that the myth that u NEED to name ur horse for it not to despawn is BUSTED. I have had 2 horses so far that i never named and i was able to walk away AND log out without them despawning. Preupdate world too btw.
Im still thinking of experiments to test out so i can finally put my stables to use...
I too have been doing a few tests to see if I can find a personal workaround, since I've received so much information from this thread I thought I might post my own findings on it as well to see if it helps anyone else.
First, I used the save technique listed by a previous poster (getbent824) and it did work to keep that horse from despawning UNTIL I took the horse out and rode it again at which point it seemed that it was able to despawn again. It seems like the more I rode the horse the more readily it despawned. But, if I saved, exited to the main menu and came back in those horses will remain intact until I ride them.
I'm still hunting those name tags so I can see if that serves as a workaround but for now, I can at least tame desirable horses, save, exit to the main menu and the horses will still be there indefinitely. It just seems to 'reset' them once I've ridden them.
I am not sure what I did but I tamed two horses last night and walked away back down in my mine shaft and so forth. Came back up after half hour and one auto save and when I returned my horses both were still there! I was glad. As I said I am not sure what I did but the horses are in a 10x11 fenced in area. aka my stables lol
In order for u to not lose ur horse u have to tame it name it and put it in pin or on lead . You can name ur horse by finding the name tag in mab spawns the u will need anvil and xp place it in anivl put the name u want in. The click on the end to grab it then u can go around naming horse animals and mobs

That would be great advise... if that actually worked reliably... but there's a bug in the current Update that actually prevents that from actually working all of the time.
I cant confirm yet properly as my world is survival and i havent yet found a name plate

I think I will research this a little further, but thanks for telling me that
