I had my horse with a saddle despawn on me in its pen when I walked away. Luckily I had recently saved so I was able to get it back. I assumed that it jumped out of the pen, so I tied it to the fence post with a lead to keep it from wandering. Of course I am assuming it simply jumped out of the pen and either ran off real fast or despawned, but I'm hoping that having it tied inside the pen should prevent this.

That's why I tied my horse "inside" the pen the second time around. Nevertheless I walked away the same distance as before, and it did not despawn. I have to test it for a greater distance though. I was thinking that it may have jumped out, if they can even do that on their own, so that's why it is tied with a lead inside the pen.

I haven't tried naming them yet in my survival world. I am going to visit the nether today and search for some chests that may give me name tags to use.

You need to name the nametag on an anvil first before using on the horse. Just thought you should know as many people don't yet realize that.
Didn't work... I put a name tagged horse... on a lead... inside a double thick double high fence wall.... with a roof.... boxed in on all sides, just to test going away and coming back... it still despawned.
i found a really shitty way to solve this I made a container of dirt 3x3with a roof, tied up my horse, named it, and left. yet as soon as it get back its gone. the lead is still on the fence post but when I try to pick it up it disappears. so to solve this i picked up another controller signed in as guest and set it down once iwas looking at the horse pen. this way they don't despawn but it sucks
I know right. Makes you wonder whether or not they even turn on an xbox and play with the new content to test it. I could understand them missing something that is hard to notice, but the issue with the horses is too big.

Especially since they made such a big deal out of the horse in the TU19 trailer video.
If an animal can't move more than 20 blocks, it can't despawn.
You obviously haven't played for a while....I've had sheep vanishing for months in a pen that's like 5x5. I hope that may be fixed now with the new update, but we'll see.
I've not had anything despawn in fence before. I have had problems with animals glitching through fence and then wandering off to despawn, but that is due to crowd control; can not have too many in a fenced in area. Otherwise the glitch will happen. Well that is my experience. (note I am referring to after the fence update that should have contained them. Before that they would despawn because the mechanic was not in yet.)
With horses I have yet to mess with those, and hearing what others have said, I think I will wait for the fix before I do. I have many other things I want to play around with, like hay bales and hoppers.

In any event, make sure your horse is tied or penned in an area less than 20x20. If an animal can't move more than 20 blocks, it can't despawn.
It despawns EVEN when tied.
I'm Canadian, and there is no igloos around. Or snow. Or polar bears. Or moose because I live in a city, but there are moose in the country.
Unless it is related to the glitch through fence thing they won't...
