When the next update rolls out... I definitely want to try this and see if this will work on the consoles too... it appears to be a way of changing the daylight sensor into a night time sensor without using signal inversion or even daylight for that matter...

You will note that the daylight sensor is completely encased in opaque blocks, and yet still seems to be able to determine when it is daytime or night time... but seems to be active in reverse, where it is active when it is dark out and inactive when the sun is up... with no redstone torches nor pistons used to invert the signal.
From the Wiki>: (1.8 Feature) "If a daylight sensor is completely cut off from the sky (its block is at sky light 0), either because it is encased in opaque blocks or because it is too far from sky exposure, then its signal pattern changes: it produces power at night instead of the day, and weather is irrelevant to the signal strength."

A 1.8 feature? I wonder if this will be incorporated and brought forward to the console in the next update when the daylight sensor is introduced ... or will we be waiting for this feature in a future update... Not that it matters too much, it's easy enough to invert, but it actually makes it very useful for deep underground redstone circuits where it is too much trouble to open a path to the sky.
There is no feature to turn your daylight sensor into a Nightlight sensor ... Yet ...
^^^ This here, the ability to enclose a daylight sensor and cut it off from light to turn it into a night sensor, or the ability to click on it to to change it to an inverted daylight sensor haven't been implemented yet. Those features should come with later updates.
I did get a chance to test it out myself and verified that this hasn't been implemented quite yet... so until then, we'll have ot use the old school conventional means for inverting a daylight sensor to a night time sensor.

Obviously, it can be inverted without surrounding it... I just didn't realize it was a feature of the daylight sensor built in.

(Daylight Sensor)
(Redstone Dust)
(Opaque Block) / (<= Redstone torch)
Or, just...
(Daylight Sensor)
(Opaque Block) / (<= Redstone torch)
Did you get it to invert without the Redstone torch
I could... but that would be a lot harder ... and likely involving either sticky pistons and/or comparators.
