So basically Im playing survival and im to the point where i need an xp farm so i build one on very basic 22 high platform (youtube guide ofcourse) to where they do fall dmg but i cant seem to get them to spawn as quick as id like due to the fact of dark caverns and uncovered areas.
So i was wondering if i build a platform up in the sky (skyblock style) then made a xp farm would that make them start spawning and if so how high would i have to build up in order for me to start actually building my xp farm.
Also If anyone has any good xp farms (non-redstone) that works on surface (without spawners) in survival please let me know as i am in desperate need of xp.
Outside 128 blocks, any mobs that do spawn will despawn immediately and will not take up any room in the mob cap (i.e. maximum number of mobs that can be spawned in the world at any one time). So, the more of your current caves you can get to be more than 128 blocks away from your mob trap, the more mobs will spawn in your trap. Keep in mind that you have to stay within the 24 to 32 block range of your spawn pads in your trap to get mobs to spawn there and move around (so they fall to their deaths). If you're farther away, the mobs that spawn in your trap either 1) won't move; 2) may despawn spontaneously, or 3) will despawn immediately (if outside 128 blocks). Use these factors to position your trap effectively. These factors apply regardless of whether the trap is on the surface, above the surface, or below. The basic principle is to reduce areas where mobs may spawn outside the trap - e.g light up caves, flood them, slab the floors of them... same with the surface around - light it up or lay down slabs. The fewer areas outside your trap (within that 128-block limit) that will spawn mobs will increase the numbers of mobs that will spawn inside your trap (provided the conditions exist inside your trap that will spawn mobs - e.g dark enough).
One reason I got determined to make a piston dropper running on an enderman concept, minus the height for enderman. That for the actual spawning and a water flow to direct them to a hole for the dropping portion that would damage/kill them. Faster results with something like that. Works better than a spawn pad, since the spawn pad type you have to wait till those mobs walk off into the water stream, and mine just gives them a initial push into the flow.
On top of what Up mentions if you do not want to deal with cave spawn I would suggest making the trap above the 128 height level, keeping in mind what Up said of the despawn radius. Build the platform they will drop down to at 129-132 and go up from there. This should in a way give you better rates in the very least, even with a standard spawn pad type trap.
If you know a bit of redstone and want to figure out how to go about it, I say have at it. It took me a while to get it right since I wanted each pressure plate to activate individual when triggered. Now that took a lot of patience and logical thinking. Else I would probably stick with the more simple designs and see if those do what you intend with the system.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Yea see I didnt know how high i should build a platform because i was gonna build me a skyblock world so i wanted to make sure i didnt go to high or build to low in the air. I was gonna stop and build my platform for all my farms and stuff at about 130 and then build up 22 or so for the drop down of mobs. Just didnt know how high skyblocks were
When they first doubled the world height from 128 to 256, there was a problem with mobs not spawning at all above 128. However, this was fixed, so I believe mobs will spawn right up to 2 blocks below the 256 height (you do need the two blocks for them to stand up). If your base platform is not well enough lit outside the trap (or slabbed, etc.), then you will be allowing mobs to spawn outside the trap on your platform. As long as you control mob spawning levels outside your trap with light, etc., you should have reasonably good mob spawning levels inside your trap. Whether this will translate into mob falls/drops depends on how good your mechanism is for causing them to fall. While water worked very well in previous versions, they have been improving the mob AI (i.e. making it so they will not be as willing to jump off the spawn platform into the water. That is one reason why many people are now resorting to piston arrangements in their traps (as Tamorr suggests).
