Hey everyone, new here, but not an unexperienced player. Although i have only stuck to playing my own maps. And i am wanting to branch out a bit more and play with others... and this i do not know how to do... i see all these server postings, but hows it work? Do i just join that main player? Or is there anything i need to configure anything etc? Also ive seen the terms gatherer and builder... im assuming thats straight forward,.. someone building and someone getting supplies... anything else i need to know?

Hey I'm new to Xbox 360 multiplayer too. i got Xbox live last night actually. I am not unexperienced in Minecraft either. I'm kinda confused about the servers too, but I would be happy to play with you. You need to add the server owner/world owner as a friend and then you can go to play on your minecraft menus and the multiplayer worlds will be on the right side of your single player ones. I'd be happy to start a world or you could start a world and we could play together. My gamertag is unbakedsquash26 (default username)
The server is the console. For someone to run a server they just need xbox live and to be playing minecraft online. Then you would need to be on their friends list to join the game. Sometimes people let in friends of friends but not usually. The great thing bout servers and playing with others is having backup for exploring mineshafts, seeing peoples builds, learning new things etc. Something to watch out for is griefing. Griefing is when people steal or destroy someones house and stuff.
The terms builder or gatherer etc are straight forward. Servers typically have an overall concept like a hunger games server, mini-games server, freebuild, hardcore survival, team builds, player versus player etc.
There are a lot of different server types, each with its own economy and rules...half of which you'll just shake your head at in disappointment.
Take a look around, find a type of world that suits what you enjoy doing in the game from the link provided above, and then expect a bunch of lag, a few idiots, and some leaving and going to a new server until you find one that actually works and is active.
Oh...and hide your stuff..or you probably won't see that stuff again.
I've also got a few Xbox live gameplay questions: Me and a few of my fiends plan on buying Xbox Gold, and playing minecraft for a few minutes on weeknights. We would use 3, maybe 4 Xboxes (Mine is original, theirs are elite), and I'd like to play spliscreen with my brother, and maybe my sister. I know all the basics (How to game invites, trust player, connection, etc.) but my questions are:
With a minimum of 3 people, on 3 different Xboxes, how badly would the game lag (In terms of FPS)?
Could I play splitscreen with both my brother and my sister? Do we need to buy a family plan Gold subscription?
If we had a group of 7 people (3 xboxes, 3 people on my Xbox, two on the others), how bad would lag get?
And finally, how might we reduce any potential lag?

1. Don't know, I believe it really depends on everything going on; how much stuff is built, how many item frames, paintings, animals and etc all in the vicinity.
2. Yes. Though it won't be split diagonally. If only 2 people play it's split in half but 3 and 4 players it is then cut into 4 equal squares. Since only your sister, brother an you are playing on that xbox, one box will be blank/black.
3. Answered in first question basically.
4. Try to avoid having a lot of stuff going on, like blowing up a lot TNT, lots of redstone, paintings, item frames, animals and etc. Your xbox has to generate everything within your vicinity, which takes up ram/memory or whatever, it has to think/process where everything is so by keeping things to a minimal and not over doing it is advised unless you really don't mind lag.
Lag should not be to bad with 3 people but 7 is going to be lagapocolypse. The best you can do is having everyone stay in the same general area. Those with the worst lag should mine/work/build in the same few chunks but they can move vertically (up and down). If you can communicate without using game chat that may help. You should not have people on different parts of the map in the nether etc. with that many people. The worst lag is going to be the people who join last usually.
If someone is not getting loaded chunks then have someone bring them saplings or plant a farm in the chunks they can see so they can farm or something.
Of course as already stated keep animal farms, pets, redstone, any automatic things like farms etc. to an absolute minimum.
Edit: Oh and make sure that you protect the people that are lagging the most. The mobs, like creepers, move at the host speed but the laggy player can not move react to or may not even see a creeper approaching so light up the areas around laggy players.

What I meant: Can you do split screen and multiplayer at the same time? (I.E. My profile would have live, my siblings do not. Could I connect to another person via live, then have my siblings play splitscreen on my Xbox?)

Thanks for both of your replies, I gave you both 1up's
Thanks everyone, most of my questions are answrred, one more tho, basically to join the server, the main console has to be on and signed in right? So if tht player isnt on, or not playing minecraft, then i and anyone else wanting to play would be SoL right? I might just stick to solo lol
