So I created a new world, which is entirely Ocean Biome (Survival Island basically). (I do have 1 Mooshroom cow on an island, thankfully) I've read on the wikis that it's near impossible to spawn animals in ocean biomes. Even though I'm creating grassy expanses of land in hopes of spontaneous generation, does anyone out there have any experience with this? Any suggestions of better ways to make animals spawn in artifical biomes?
Animals simply do not spawn in ocean biomes. Making more land there does not seem to cause them to start spawning.
On the other hand, sometimes survival island seeds have pockets of other biomes existing in the code, but those biomes don't have land (or sufficient land) to spawn animals. This is when making more grassland in those areas eventually spawns new animals. A good sign is if you find lily pads or ice anywhere on the water in your ocean, since those areas would actually be landless swamp or taiga/tundra biomes. If you had an island that initially had a tree or trees, try expanding it. It might actually be a hills biome.
I've found that the grassy landmass must be larger than a chunk (16 x 16) to spawn animals; and that chickens will usually spawn in first.
Thanks for replies. Sadly this map has no ice or lily pads, no submerged areas I can raise up a few blocks. There was only 1 tree on the whole map, it was lonely... But I can use this information in the future hopefully!
Seed is Kingdom, if anyone cares to check it out and give me any findings of their own on my animal issue!
I checked out Kingdom and I have good news for you. The upper lefthand corner of your map is not ocean biome, but a hills biome. I encountered chickens and pigs spawning naturally on an island at X-289, Y64, Z-377.
Disclaimer - Note that I have not updated from TU16 to TU17, so if the biomes shifted with that last update, my results won't be accurate for you. If the biomes didn't shift, then you should be OK.
Also, to build landmasses in deep ocean areas is not hard. You don't have to build the entire land mass up from the ocean floor. Just make one pillar from the ocean floor to the water surface and then just build outward over top the water from that pillar.
Yes, UpUp, I had some chickens spawn there when I went to go check it out again. I must not have stayed close enough to that chunk the first time to get any to spawn. The zombie spawner just inside the hill did give me a rush too! lol.

Yeah, the spawner gave me a start too (and I was in creative). It's been awhile since I've been on a seed with one that close to the surface. The saddle was a nice touch, I thought; particularly since the other animal I spotted was a pig. Nice survival island seed, BTW. When I'm done with the treeless one I'm on right now, I'll maybe give it a go. I like playing different survival island seeds... going on them until I die and then starting a different one.
Thanks!!
