Hello, I've run into quite a predicament and I was wondering if anyone here knew how to help. I'm not really sure how dropped items work in the Xbox Edition when they are outside of loaded chunks. I know that in PC, before the addition of hoppers, a lot of people made long streams that carried items into unloaded chunks and the items wouldn't despawn until you were close. So naturally, since there are no hoppers in the xbox edition, I assumed it was just like PC and I could build one. Several hours later, I have a stream that carries mob drops over 200 blocks away, but the items are despawning.
The way I want to apply the despawning mechanic: I want to have drops from my mob system be carried away so far that the countdown timer for their despawning stops until I'm near them.
Is this possible in the 360 Edition? So far it seems like items despawn no matter how far away you are. (which can be REALLY bad because if you die far away from home, your items are essentially gone unless you can travel a far distance in a very small time frame)
Let me know if the same mechanics for dropped items apply in the 360 edition as they do in the PC. If not, I will be disappointed.
There is a maximum number of dropped items that can be active (regardless of how far away you carry them). I believe that limit is something like 200 items (unless 4J increased it at some point or it changed when they brought in the stacking drops). Anyway, I suspect your device is creating more drops than the limit, so anything over the limit with start despawning. I also think that due to the fact that chunks on the Xbox do not unload once loaded, items all over the world will despawn after the 5 minute time limit regardless of where they are located.
Thank you. I think what you said about the chunks not unloading was what was happening. That can really be detrimental to anyone who dies in a cave far away. Kiss your inventory goodbye!

Fortunately, the Xbox 360 worlds are not that large, so you can get back to most places within the 5-minute time limit. The issue can also be resolved by carrying your bed with you and resetting your spawn closer to your mining site each night (or every few nights). Personally, it's never been a problem for me. Just be sure to leave your bed set up while you mine and then go back to get just before dusk and walk it to the new location.
I believe that in the next version if we don't get hoppers, that we will be able to use portals to send items to the neither for pickup later, but again only 200 entitles (not items), a stack of 32 cobble is only 1 item, not 32. Despawning of items in the overworld isn't effected by unloaded chunks, tried and tested, used a neither portal dropped items in the overworld, entered the neither and used a ice passage way to another portal which was more the half way across the map, exited the portal with 45 seconds, saved n quit/reloaded, waited 10mins, went back to the area using the neither portal, was supprised to see the items on the ground but they instantly despawned. They should have had at least 3mins left before they despawned upon the chunk being loaded.
I have dropped items in the neither, exited the neither, waited 10mins, entered the neither and to my surprise the items were still there, and furthermore remained for the full 5mins, this also works in the end, thus portals once they allow items to pass through should work for temp storage.
With this all said, I personally believe that we will probably get hoppers in the next update. So portal storage will probably not be used, but I'm only guessing that hoppers will arrive in the next update.
