I want to make a backup save of my world just in case anything happens to it or to my Xbox, but I heard if you make a copy or save it that it messes it up and disables achievements and takes you off the leaderboards, that kind of makes a survival world seem pointless.
As long as you are signed in with the profile that created the world when you copy it to a USB or the cloud (so that the "ownership" of the save is not tampered with), then it's perfectly fine. Things get messed up if you try to copy or move a world created by someone else.
UpUp is correct.
If you couldn't do it that way, how would you? There wouldn't be any way to make a backup.
BTW, there's several problems with the auto-save: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Xbox_360_Edition_issues
As near as I can tell from my research, the auto-save kinda works now (at least 'something' happens), but you can't get to, or start up, the autosaved file. (In other words, "auto save"... doesn't.) The only way to truly backup your world is to do it manually to a USB (or cloud, or Dropbox, etc.)
Yeah, the auto-save feature is bad. I turned it off and never turned it on again. My usual procedure is manual save, then quit without saving. Never seems to give me any trouble.
You sure? I heard if you copied your own save it'd mess it up too.
Yes, I'm very sure. Where people get messed up is that they think they can use this feature to create copies of worlds to share with other people (that is, they mess with the "ownership" of the file). Another area where they get messed up is in trying to create multiple copies of the same world on the save drive by renaming and copying back. That one can be done if done a very specific way, but it's dicey... so I would avoid that as well. Another area that can cause problems is if you're not just backing up the file, but taking the file (along with your profile) to play on another Xbox. I'm not sure what they do wrong with this one... it might be that they forget to also grab the savedata file associated with their profile (or maybe they do and that's the mistake)... this is not something I do so I'm not sure there.
If you're just doing what you say you are... i.e. making an emergency backup of your world... it should be fine. If you need to use that backup (that is, if your main file messes up), then just be sure to delete the messed up file from your hard drive before to copy the backup back onto the hard drive.
Of course, you'd copy your USB saved file to the (MC world) Save folder on the new machine (just like you'd 'restore' it on the old machine).
(But you're right- you must use your profile to play your world.)
Now, what do you mean by a "different xbox"? You wouldn't happen to mean your friend's xbox, would you?
What if my Xbox dies or something and I'd need to use the save on a different Xbox but with my same profile?
As I said, it's not something I do so I really don't know. If you go into the Minecraft folder on your hard drive you will see a list of the following types of files:
Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition (if you're not playing from disc)
Minecraft Title Update
Various Downloaded Items files (eg. Fantasy Texture Pack)
Saved Game Files (e.g. New World Save) - These will also show a profile name on the right (i.e. the profile that created the world)
Minecraft Save Info (their will be one of these files for every profile that has played Minecraft on your Xbox)
It is the last set of files where that profile's stats are kept and also probably the info about their last inventory (but I'm not sure)... and I'm also not sure whether or not copying it messes it up or not copying it that messes up the leaderboard stats. I do know for sure, that if you don't copy it and then have to copy your saved game backup back onto that same Xbox (because, say, the main file gets corrupted)... nothing goes wrong with the leaderboard stats. If you're doing this to play your gamesave on a different Xbox, my honest answer is I don't know. (BTW, my understanding is that it is perfectly OK under the Microsoft TOS to take your profile and gamesaves over to a friend's to play there, I just personally don't know whether the appropriate procedure is to also take the save info files or not... my guess is not, but it's just a guess. If you're doing this, you will be temporarily moving your profile to that Xbox and will, of course, have to remember to move it back to your own Xbox when you're done playing there. That is, your profile can't be active on two Xboxes at the same time.)
