I have had this problem for a while now. I keep finding these deep, branching multi-level caves. As I go about exploring I find that I get lost pretty often. what would be the best way to get the most out of these environmentS as far as resources, what ways should I mine to get the most out of it. And any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Basically, bring enough to survive on your own in the event you do get lost. I bring enough for me to build an entirely new base in the event I'm lost underground for a few days. It does take up some inventory space but its better to have things you need for the one time you need it versus dying with diamonds. I've also tried only lighting the right side of any branch you go through, so when you're backtracking, the torches should be on your left. It can get a bit tedious, and if you mess up the placement, you might confuse yourself. If worst comes to worst and you need to get to the surface pronto, just dig a staircase through the ground, up to the surface. When you get your bearings on the surface, it may be a bit easier to orient yourself in the caves. Good luck and hope this helps!
Yeah the bucket of water thing is a must, I've recently discovered. And I will bring a chest, a furnace, and a crafting table + some wood. Any tips for mining obsidian??
If you're looking to just mine obsidian I would do that in the End, after you've defeated the dragon. Just build a platform out of your choice of block underneath the obsidian spawning platform you start on when you enter the End. This keeps you from falling when you mine the platform. Don't use dirt or any block that mines easily; falling into the void hurts a little. I would lay down another obsidian platform about 2 blocks under the spawning platform that way you don't accidentally mine out your floor. Then mine the spawning platform. Of course, I would use a diamond pick with a high efficiency. Once you mine out the spawning platform just go back to the Overworld and then back to the End. The spawning platform will generate again and give you 25 more obsidian blocks. Way easier than using Nether portals to farm obsidian in my opinion.

why not go through less trouble and just mine the pillars? .-.

Yeah, he could do that too. I left mine in tact. I don't like to mess with the natural landscapes of my worlds too much. If I can find a renewable source I'll use that for as long as I can. I'll trade to get redstone and turn that into obsidian before I mess with my pillars!
I never could get the torch thing right, so I use jack-o-lanterns. I place them as I go, so the face is always looking toward the way I came in. Then, when I need to backtrack, I just go the way the jack-o-lanterns are looking.
I usually carry a stack of signs so I can leave important notes like "You've been down this way five times already!" I also use a few simple codes: two torches on the floor mean I've checked out that entire branch and mined everything down there, no need to go back that way. One torch on the floor means there's more to do down there. Two torches on the wall (usually where I've sealed off an opening with dirt blocks, which I always carry for the purpose) means there are mobs behind there; three torches mean there's a spawner.
Things to never go spelunking without: a stack of jack-o-lanterns, a stack of dirt blocks, a stack of ladders (especially useful when you're in the bottom of a ravine), two buckets of water (one of them may be the means of getting to the bottom of said ravine), and a couple of stacks of torches, because you can go through a lot of them very, very fast. Depending on place and conditions, a stack or two of wood blocks may come in handy for making a crafting table, chests, doors, torches, and tools, if you've found an area to thoroughly exploit and you want to camp there for a while.
I like the idea of mining the pillars and I just started carrying cobblestone stairs, that way if I dont find stairs it's not the way out. I also recently added a nether portal to my house dang pigment keep comin through! But I found when I went to the nether my portal was in a nether fortress. at the end of one hall was a blaze spawner. My friend and I killed them and as of Monday night I made my first potion brewing station. Now all I need to do is find a few magma cubes to make fire resistance potion!

trust me, ive had some pretty large caves before
one time i walked out of a cave that intersected a mineshaft with 2 stacks of iron, a stack of gold, 11 diamonds
and i didnt even explore he whole thing + my friend had 3 stacks of iron from the cave (we went in together)
OT: just go in head first....make sure to bring a water bucket.
when one path ends, choose a new path
