Creating a server for people to play on and I wanted to make an ultra base. I know no base in ungriefable but I'd like to make a cool one with lots of safeguards.
A few questions.
What's the best way to enter/exit a sky base?
Was thinking of making an underwater base but digging underwater takes forever. Don't want people to instantly see it. Any tips with that?
Any tnt cannons that are even semi aimable? I wanted to hide some around an area and be able to set them off from a hidden room overlooking the area.
Any bids of traps defensive things or anything of the sort post them here!
If you make a sky base then use a nether portal as the entrance. If you put the nether portal in the sky first, then go through the portal and come back, then place a portal at ground level or underground. When you enter the lower portal you will go to the nether and when you leave the nether you will be transported to the sky city. To get off the sky city jump into a deep pool.
the best anti-griefer place to place a base is Mineshaft (u can't put beds in the nether or the end). In the mineshaft you will use cave spiders as a defense system. Build a 10x10x8 obsidian box around the cave spider spawner. Only have 1x1 holes in the walls. That way cave spiders can crawl out but people have to mine obsidian to get in. Have the cave spider outlet holes on every side; dozens of them. You can use redstone lights to cut the spawner off or a disperser to pour lava into the spawner to cut it off etc.

Nether portal is the best. If you are going to do the build with other players, you can always use a switch activated waterfall so you can swim up to the base, but that would require a player already in your base to activate.

Underwater is not the best for xbox as the worlds are far smaller than the pc version. So if someone was determined, they would probably find your base by searching around a bit and some luck.
For underwater base design, I never have done one myself, but i did read that the best way to do an underwater base is to build a wooden platform on the surface of the water, then build the inside area of your structure by using sand, then remove all the wood so the sand will fall into the water below. That way you will be able to put your outer wall around the sand, then remove all the sand inside, and have it cleared of water source blocks.
if you want to make it really difficult for an enemy faction to enter your base, i recommend building a sky base over the ocean itself.

As far as I know, TNT cannons are only semi accurite, meaning you can make a good guess of where the TNT would land when you target a specific spot.

1- When you are not using your nether portal to do anything, keep your nether portal off. That will prevent any nasty surprises when you least expect it.
2- Lava defenses can be handy.
3- Using pistons, lava, and water, you can build self repairing cobblestone walls.
4- Don't build an underground base if its going to be easy to locate, it will be a huge pain to defend against people digging through.
5- Your best defense is a good deterrence to slow the enemy down. Traps that do severe damage or simply kill the enemy work, but you only get one use out of them because they wont be hard to spot for an experienced PVP player who knows what to look for, and your enemy will simply return afterwards with a way to get around them.
6- Your best defense is to counter an enemy by fighting them yourself with weapons. Given time, traps can be defeated which means It's best to design a system that slows them down, and raises an alarm to warn you. That way you and your alliance will have time to prepare your defense.
7- As stated before so that you put special attention to this "The most important defense is raising the alarm to warn you of an attack."
8- build a safe room, combined with an early warning alarm so you have enough time to reach and secure it.
9- A self-destruct button in your safe room that detonates your base can be a very effective deterrent. Just make sure to put enough materials in the safe room to rebuild. The self-destruct should be used only as a last resort. The enemy is going to strip your base clean anyway, might as well kill them so they don't get your stuff.
I think the sky base may be the best bet. Although I love underground, people always use the X ray glitch.
I'd like to hear more about alarm systems too.
The mineshaft setup is simply building underground. I would not recommend doing it as the worlds are not as big, the x-ray glitch as you mentioned, and it would be a huge pain in the ass to defend. If this was Pc with faction settings that prevented destroying blocks in another alliances territory, it could be a very decent and defensible base. One benefit of defending this from an enemy is that it would be easy to set traps as it can be very confusing for the attackers (Imagine invading a mineshaft basically).
Sky base without a doubt is the most defensible base. There are really only two ways to get up to one if you are an attacker. Either you build up to it, or catch and open their nether portal. unfortunately for an attacker, most properly run alliances take proper security precautions and turn off the nether portal when not in use and if I recall, they even block it to prevent a connection. So that leaves building up to your base, which can be even harder if built above water. For a defender, this is pretty easy as all you need to do it look down and say to your buddies "oh look, people are building up to us." Then you and your buddies get your bows n arrows out, shoot them off, dump lava and TNT on em, or even use dispensers filled with mob eggs to drop mobs down on their building platform when they get too close.
Alarm systems can be anything you want really. Most people make them out of note blocks, and some will make them out of lights that go on or off when triggered. It depends what you are more likely to notice. You could always try and make a redstone system connected to note blocks, and have the redstone circuit's on a repeating charge once activated. That way the alarm will keep sounding and you have to activate a switch to deactivate it.

That is one of the most effective defenses I use.
I build underwater a lot. But I do it in creative.
Step one. Make build.
step two. Fill with wool.
step three. Burn out the wool.
