Per the chart, level 5 actually has a slightly higher concentration of diamonds than level 12. However, it is also far more likely that you'll encounter lava above your head on level 5 than on level 12. Most of the lava lakes in the world top out at level 12... so, when you encounter it at your feet you can just poor a bucket of water on it (turning it to obsidian) and keep on going.
