ok, so some may not believe me, but I still have my very first world I created in Minecraft.. back when we could not run, and the only food we had was bread/cake/porkchop.. and the porkchop and cakes did not stack.. This map did not have a Stronghold/End/Abandoned Mineshaft/Villages etc.
I am wondering if when we can transfer worlds to the Xbox One and can expand the maps.. would my world get those updates? or would it just be alot of unexplored areas?
I have put alot of time in the world, it has never been in creative and one day I was doing my shout out video for the end of the year, and while I was recording I came across 2 mooshrooms not far from my house? I have reset the nether a few times, and killed Zombies to get the carrots and potatoes.. so those are the newest recent things to the world.. I just tweeted to 4Jstudios last night asking if new structures would generate in the world.. no answer yet
I think it would like generate the new areas of the map in accordance with the seed string just as those areas would generate if the same seed string were used to create an entirely new world on that device. The old area of the map (which has been already explored) wouldn't change (which is just the same as already explored areas of the maps don't change to add in new stuff when an update hits, but unexplored areas MIGHT include the new stuff if that happens to be an area of the seed where that stuff would generate on a newly created map).
Sorry to disappoint you, but at launch 360 worlds transferred to the One will still be 360 size.
They will add the "Resize Save" option later to expand the worlds.

I wasn't really speculating on when they might add it, but on the mechanics of how they might add it. That is, that a person would not be able to specifically place the old map inside the new one, but rather the game would just arbitrarily add the terrain/biomes around the old map in accordance with whatever the new terrain generation formula and old seed string calculate. I'm not planning to buy an Xbox One for a long while yet (probably it'll wait until the 360 finally craps out or they come up with a brand new game that really interests me that isn't available at all on the 360)... so, when that they're not adding this feature at launch makes no never mind to me.
ya I know that... I am still working on the world until the Xbox One will expand older worlds. until then, I will probably start a new world when it comes out so I can go explore the whole world
* IF they're able to use the same seed so the terrain is 'somewhat like' what you have in the old world, how would it know what not to add in the new one? I suspect that expanded parts of the world will contain all the latest features. And, of course, all be unexplored.
* IF the game knows the old seed, 4J may be able to use it to extend the old world. But they could also let you input your own seed for the expansion- you can use a new seed, a random seed, or your old seed.
* I think everyone is assuming that the old 360 world will be plopped in the middle of the new one and the expanded part expands in 4 directions. OR they could plop the old world in the corner and just expand it in 2 directions. (That's they way I'd do it).
Of course, we know nothing for sure at this point (and I'd be surprised if 4J knows the details either).
We'll find out. Until then there's no sense worrying about it.
Assuming the new size preserves coordinates, meaning that your map's "0,0,0" is still in the middle of your existing map, it should spread out from the borders of your existing map. And where new terrain generates, it will almost certainly do this:
You're still misunderstanding what I'm saying... the new terrain would generate still applying the same seed string number as the old world had. If that string was "404" then that value would be used in the formula... just the way it is now. The seed string doesn't change when an update hits, the formula does. Before update, say, the formula is "a x 404"; after an update it's "b x 404"... This is as opposed to the game assigning a new seed string to the "custom" expanded worlds (which they could probably do somehow... but I think it's unlikely given what they've done in the past with updates and unexplored terrain).
As HotaruTomoe points out, it is unlikely that this addition of terrain is going to be as "seamless" as people are envisioning. Most likely, it will show up with the squared off clashes of terrain we've seen before (as per the pictures)... and most likely, most will wind up creating new worlds anyway. Way back when, I tried keeping an old world partially unexplored to leave room to get a village when that update hit. I was less than pleased with the result and now I make sure that I completely explore any world within a single update so that, even if the weather still changes, the terrain at least blends consistently with the adjacent terrain.
