You need to make a compass first from iron and redstone. Then you need to make paper from sugar cane. Then you can make a map. I forget how many iron and paper you need. Im sure someone will know.Find diamonds at level 12. Check around lava.

Compass requires 4 iron, 1 redstone to craft. Once crafted you need to combine that with 8 paper. It takes 3 sugar cane to make 3 paper.
I actually can't believe you went to all the trouble you did to post this when, instead, you could have just gone to the second tab (tools) in your crafting interface, scrolled through the various columns until you found "map" (which is in the farthest right column BTW) and then, following the instructions at the bottom of your screen, click X to get either a description or a list of ingredients (or just even looked at the symbols in the crafting table). That would have told you right away that you needed 8 paper and a compass. By repeating the scrolling action, you would have found the compass in the crafting interface just one item above the map (which would have told you that you need 4 iron and 1 redstone to craft that item). Paper is found under the "painting" tab - you need 3 sugarcane to craft 3 paper. Far quicker than even looking it up in the PC edition Wiki (which is also an option for you since the recipes are the same) and FAR FAR quicker than posting a question here.

I've been having the most trouble finding diamond.

paper is in the last section of the crafting table. same place as paintings and dyes. you change sugar cane directly into paper.
Sugarcane. You will need 3 pieces of it.
