been trying to use various in game strategies to prevent griefing. it seems I have come across something useful. since cave spiders can crawl through 1x1 holes I can build a 10x10x8 box of obsidian around a cave spider spawner in a checkerboard pattern in the walls so there are dozens of exit points for spiders but difficult for people to enter. I use piston activated lava to turn the spawner off when home. I can put chest and other valuable items below this obsidian spider box and have an active defense. Even better to have multiple spawners to better cover the area.

Great idea. If it helps, you should combine this with a pressure plate trap door in the ground to make the griefers fall into a hole filled with spider webs. then it would take them forever to get out of the trab as I doubt they would have shears on them lol, then the spiders will be constantly attacking the helpless griefer as they can walk right through spider webs.
I don't know if I am correct or not, but I believe you can collect the spawners in the pc version of minecraft and place them wherever you wish. I assume you would need a silk touch item for this, but hopefully it will be added soon so that we can make more of these traps, and improve upon their efficiency.
Would it be possible for you to take some pictures of your creation? It sounds like a design that could work well for a treasure room. =p

I have tried posting pics before but I must be doing something wrong because it's not working.
Here is a video that shows exactly what area in your house would be covered by the active defense. A couple of things in the video are oriented toward the PC but very good information overall.
edit: This is the kind of cave spider spawner group that can stop anyone if you protect the spawners with the obsidian box.
Not really. He would keep his chests inside the room, and if anybody try's to get it they have to deal with obsidian, cobwebs and cave spiders. If they give up on trying to get it, they are free to walk away

The activation area around spawners is 16 blocks (like a big ball shape). So you can have a room below the obsidian box with 20 or so chest and the spider guards will defend it. In fact making this room out of obsidian with 1x1 block openings around the top of the walls and soul sand on the floor makes this a very hard defense to break.
I like how shortly after you post this, there is a suggestion on the suggestions thread to nerf obsidian such that TNT would destroy it... coincidence? Maybe, but maybe not.

What i find interesting about this trap is that when you look at many other traps, most are meant to deliver some sort of killing blow to an enemy player that is invading your base, whether its in faction pvp or simple survival. Watching how a lot of faction pvp is done on youtube though, it seems that a lot of these traps are very predictable to any experienced player and really do not stop them at all.
This trap that Baldur made seems to rely more on a deterrence factor rather than a danger factor. By the way he designed it, it sounds like it would be a huge pain in the butt to raid simply because you will have to deal with a defence that is totally automatic and has no off switch built in that a griefer would devote a lot of time to find.
Combined with extra traps such as pitfalls filled with cobwebs that the spiders can attack through and possibly a falling sand trap, you could have an easy and simple defence that slows the intruder down enough for him to either back off, or hopefully you will return in time to catch him.
Also keep in mind that the best defence against an enemy, especially in faction is simply raising the alarm for your faction so that they know your under attack. Which makes this a huge benefit if you can slow your enemy down in time to prepare a defence.

I meant entrapment as in enticing someone. Not capturing them.

You could also put buttons and pressure plates in all blocks to stop people placing torchesYou could also put buttons and pressure plates in all blocks to stop people placing torches

that is another good idea.
also since cave spider spawners are typically in groups and may have zombie of skeleton spawners nearby you can build a overlapping zone defense. On previous updates on one server a friend used a skeleton spawner to drop skellys in minecarts that were on a cirlular track. so they were mobile gaurds around the base underground. I don't know if you can still do that or not.
