A mod, or modification, is something that alters either the function, or appearance of an already exsisting item. Mods exsist in many aspects of life, not limited to video games. such examples include; modified tools; modified Parts(cars ect.); modified rules; modified wheelchairs. basicly, if you can think of it, and then change it, its modifiable.
MineCraft Mods...
Minecraft PC sports a range of user created mods, both cosmetic and functional. players have the option of changing their skins, block textures, or even adding new mobs, new blocks, or the ability to effect gravity. again, i could list more, but the options are endless.
These mods are for the most part created by users, and are put up for download on the internet. There are however mods that are created by the game developers and put into minecraft directly. thats right, by definition, each time Mojang (PC) or 4J (Xbox) provide an update inwhich they alter the game in any way, they are modifying it from its original content. its a mod.
So the Xbox has mods, but not what i want
Typicaly, when discussing mods on these fourms, posters are asking for "User Created Mods". Currently, players have the ability to DL skin packs, texture packs, and Mashup packs(which include muisc!)but these cost money, and dont effect the gameplay. Game consoles have always been differnt from computers in what they are capable of. instead of buying a computer which can be upgraded as new technolgy comes out, a game console puts everyone on an even footing. when a new game comes out, you dont need to check to see if you have the right software to run it, because your console SHOULD have the ability (some games are released for console that break this rule).
Consoles however can not download some of the more standard programs available to a computer, Such as Word. the option to right click on a program and view more information on it, or even alter its programing is not available to us. This makes User created mods unavalable to us. there are ways in which some have gotten around this, though it is not legal, and ive never cared to look into it more. (i have played a halo game in which the plasma pistol shot trains... yes, trains) the Xbox one woulnt even charge my Iphone because its programed to not comunicate with it. unless of course thats since been patched.
How could we get user created mods?
in order for the console to have the ability to allow legal user created maps, 4J studios would have to create a program in which you could alter the game. imagine 4J studios is a cook, making his family recipe stew. this would be the same as him sending you an invitation to enter the kitchen and add what ever you want to his recipe, his art. Now he probably wouldnt want you to just be able to add anything you wanted, because you or someone else invited may not have any cooking experiance. so he would probably clear some things off the table, and only put measured amounts of a few differnt things on the table, and tell you that was all you could use.
so this program would possibly be limited, because that would make it user friendly. Minecraft PC may support user created mods, but i dont think they have a button you can press to go right to modding. other people may have created programs for it, and thats fine for Mojang, because they dont have to do it themselves. But 4J would have to write this program themselves, and that means taking time away from working on something that is made by a professional, so that they can allow the masses to come up with whatever crazy idea they would like, things that could break the game, or run into legality issues(maybe)
What about importing mods?
Alot of people bring up mods and refrence some other already exsisting mod on the PC. to me, these people dont want to make their own mods, they want to have mods that already exsist on another platform. its easy for one to think that such a mod would be as simple as copy and paste the file into the Xbox, because thats how its done for PC. but those lines of code have to "talk" to the code already in the base game, and the codding for the Xbox is differnt than that of the PC. In order for 4J to impliment these mods, they would have to go though each line and check to see if it properly refrences into their product. when making changes to these lines, you would possibly alter how they where intended to work. suddenly youve changed something else, and it all ends up being a lot harder than it originaly was.
im not saying they arnt capable of doing it, im simply asking, why? would you want to work so hard to make an adjustment on someone elses soup so that it goes with youres or would you rather recreate what you want out of it from scratch.
Conclusion
so maybe we dont get that new Biome mod that just came out for the PC, but maybe 4J takes one of those biomes, uses it as insparation for their own biome, and adds that in a future TU... the games not finished yet, they are still adding things. so i wouldnt work myself up about it too much. were going to get what were going to get, and prodding them in the sides every week and saying "gimmie that mod" isnt the humane way of getting anything done.
Thanks for reading, feel free to discuss. flamers will be met with cold water.
We will never get user created mods. Ever. Microsoft will not allow it. Doesn't matter what 4J wants and it doesn't matter what Mojang wants. It's Microsofts console and they have never allowed and will never allow random consumers to make modifications for their games. (Not saying the OP doesn't understand this)
4J has already said what their plans are for things like this. They will eventually make content DLC, other than skins, textures, and mash-ups. When they do, they said they will likely look at the PC and here on these forums to see what is most popular to judge what they should make for the DLC. You'll also have to pay for it.
Also, this will likely be locked since it's about mods and that last thread about mods went way off the deep end and got locked for it.
i appreciate that you added this, because i wasnt sure at first. i do understand this, and mearly want to have this post stick around so that others can read it and educate themselves after they watch some youtube video with bear caves and a circus and decide that they must post a wish list for these things(thats why i put this in the discussion page lol)
when you say "microsoft will never allow mods" i think youre being a bit vauge here. when people hear "mod" they instantly think of a change to the game. but as project spark has shown us (game for free DL on xbox one) while microsoft may not allow modifications to be made to the game, they will allow the ability to edit within a game, in a controlled enviorment. project spark is of course a game designed to allow you to open up a list of commands and actions, or what it calls an objects "Brain" and allows you to write triggers and subsequent actions.
something like this for minecraft would effectivly be a "psudo" mod. but it will never happen, Project spark is designed for this specific purpose, the modifications made in that game ARE the game. it would be easyer to recreate minecraft in project spark than it would be to create project spark in minecraft.
thanks for the post, but im hoping that we dont get this banned, so remember, no responses are attacks. we are staying in the shallow end for this one.

On this forum when people hear mod, they instantly think of mods made by players for Minecraft. There are many here that assume players on the console will one day have that same freedom to make anything they want willy nilly like people do on PC.
That is never going to happen. Like I said before, 4J has said they will eventually begin releasing DLC and use popular mods on the PC and those recommended here on the forum as the basis for what becomes DLC. Microsoft will never allow anyone to get into the code and create a mod for the game other than 4J themselves.
For some reason, there are people here on the forum that do not understand this.
1- Mod 'creators' seem to me to think of themselves as 'special' and 'saviors' of MC. They have this grand view that they can make MC 'better'. In truth, most mods are pure junk and/or nothing but cheats. There's thousands of them out there, but only a handful are actually worth anything. Another thing about 'creators' is that they have the idea that everyone will actually want their mod. Finally, 'creators' are only concerned with their mod and will do anything to the program to make it work. They could care less how it affects anybody else's mod. There is no standardization or rules to follow- think "mod anarchy". The end result is it's not unusual for mods to conflict with each other.
2- MC PC players have become very spoiled, and now they've spilled over to the consoles. For some reason console players think all they have to do is pay the measly $20 for the game and everything else should be given to them totally free... forever. (Hey, that's the way it works on the PC, right?) Mods (DLC), skins, updates, textures, whatever. The idea that they have to pay a $1 or two for anything that was produced by the people who actually make the game, know their game, is thoroughly tested, and that actually works is, to players, just "anti-minecraft". (Sorry Lucy, everything can't be '5 cents'.)
It's all about price. (If it ain't free- it's a Bad Thing.) But players don't get it. They want 'mods' (cheats, mostly).
But isn't all the new stuff added in (free) updates a 'mod'?
Isn't DLC a 'mod'?
What is the difference between 4J making a 'mod' that changes the game and 'the community' making one? (Oh, that's right- 4J doesn't do cheats).
Geneo you bring up some solid points, and things that i actualy brought up myself.
WolfeUK, and the hellkat, im doubting you actualy read the post. i do not support mods. i support the education of the masses so that they will stop asking for something that they may or may not fully understand.
If just ONE person reads this and decides not to post a new thread in the suggestion fourms for Mods, then the thread has done its job.
but really guys, i hope youre reading the thread to know what its about before you start attacking it. youre both on the same team.
Just food for thought but there is a game on the 360 that allowed user created content... Rock Band had it done quite awhile back when they opened the Rock Band Network... Users had to be approved if I am not mistaken and then the user created songs had to go through all the rigorous steps as the Company made songs.

That isn't exactly the same thing however. The stuff being created was being created within the confines of the game using assets and things already in the game. Much like the music studio in later Guitar Hero games. That also allowed people to create songs and share them with the masses.
What people want for Minecraft is to be able to create completely new stuff not based on anything in the game already. New mobs, new areas, new items, new weapons, new armor, etc, etc, etc. Microsoft would never allow that type of modding because it would require giving people access to the games code in order to ensure the mods actually worked and were created the correct way. Microsofts consoles are closed development environments. They will not allow random people from around the world access to any of it's code to make a simple little mod for Minecraft.
Also, why should they? Without mods, a tiny world, and limited content compared to the PC version the Xbox 360 Edition is nearly matching the PC version in sales. As of the beginning of April 2014, the Xbox 360 Edition had sold over 12,000,000 copies. The PC version currently sits at 15,757,712 copies sold. So the console version, which lacks stuff like modding, is only 3 million behind in sales. Proof that modding is not an integral part of the game or its longevity for most regular people. Especially since most people buying the console version do so for their kids, who could care less about mods. They just want to play Minecraft.
