Some I'm using this seed http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2531350-great-seed-6-villages-2-jungle-temples-1-desert-temple-all-biomes-and-more/ and it has a long river I'm using to floaty boat around the map to different bases/villages. As the map shows part of the river is frozen. I want to make the river at least 2 blocks deep and at least 6 blocks wide. Some places it's 6 deep and 12 wide. So what is the best way to get rid of ice in a low key fashion. I have used burning nether rack before on the surface to melt a channel through the ice but want something less obvious and fire spreads is on.
There are zero issues with boating through shallow water (as long as it's all water source blocks, unsure if flowing water is a problem).
I tried to look up information on ice melting online, it seems to me that torches will melt ice upto 2 blocks away and glowstone/lamps/lanterns will melt ice upto 3 blocks away.
Here is a top down diagram of ice melting distances if a light source is placed on top of the black box:
blue is frozen ice
torches can melt all ice that occupy yellow boxes
glowstone/lamps/lanterns can melt ice in yellow and red boxes

Not before I get my Viking long boat.
