Today, I started digging straight through a mountain to bypass a jungle biom.At one point, I started digging straight up. I thought I would be able to get to the top of the mountain this way.
However, I ended up digging into this black space. At first I though it was night, but there were no stars. Then I tried exiting the tunnel, and "jumping into the darkness, but I couldn't.
I didn't dig through bedrock, so that's not the issue. All I can figure, is that the game couldn't create a chunk for the area I dug into.Has anyone else experienced this?

I actually experienced an terrain update error two days ago.
It was very minimal (about 10 blocks or so from a Creeper exploding on someone else) and was fixed by left triggering each spot where a block should've/shouldn't've been.
I was walking across a plain biome in my current seed when a section of dirt no bigger than 8X8 was completely voided out as described above. Curious, I saved and then jumped in. I got stuck, but was able to extract myself by dumping sand into the void. Once I was out, the dirt reloaded, I guess, and everything was as it should be.

Disturbingly, these sorts of glitches seem to have increased with the last update(s). There was something similar going on just after TU9 as I recall and 4J made some adjustments. Hopefully, something can be done.
Part of my house wall turned see through the other day, I thought a creeper had blown it up but the black outlines showed up.
I pulled left trigger on it and the wood blocks showed up again.
Is the the same thing that happened to you?

It sounds like a similar issue.

That's about all I can say that might relate.

I dug a block right next to the black area, and the void repainted itself to a normal dirt block.
