I'm looking into buying the Xbox360 edition of Minecraft (specifically the disk version, not the Xbox Live Arcade download version), and am wondering how do I set up a server, so that not only can I play, but also invite others to join me in my game? Can I download run the dedicated server software from Mojang called Minecraft_Server.exe on my PC? Is there a special version of this server I will need to install on my PC that is designed to be connected to by Xbox360 consoles? Or is there some special server software that needs to be run directly from my Xbox360? Does the Xbox360 edition of Minecraft come with built-in server code so you can launch the server directly from the game itself?
Just insert the disc, have an active Xbox Live Gold account, invite up to seven friends to your world with online play enabled, and have fun!
Do I have to have gold? I thought that XBL gold was required to connect to others' servers. I thought (or at least hoped) that I could get by with XBL silver to start my own server. Bummer, cause I don't want to shell out the dough for XBL gold.
As an alternative, is there a LAN multiplayer mode for Xbox360 MC? Maybe I could invite people over and have an MC party, if I can use ethernet cables (or wireless adapters) + router and sent up a LAN game, and not have to shell out big $$$ for XBL gold.
Or maybe split-screen multiplayer mode? Does Xbox360 MC have a split-screen mode? I have 2 controllers for my Xbox360.

You need XBL gold to join or host ANY online game.
Minecraft has SplitScreen multiplayer, however that's not a server, and the players are local.
