Ok, so I've been spending too much time in the Nether post TU-16 and a few things have come up.
1. Ambient sounds. I know they added ambient sounds a while back in the Overworld to the caves etc. to add atmosphere, but apparently this also applies to the Nether. But it's not just the drips and groans you get in the Overworld, oh no! If you stand still too long in the Nether, you hear what sounds like a little girl whimpering in fear. I was playing last night, home alone in the dark, and this kept happening and it scared the living poo out of me. Very freaking creepy.
2. Do trees behave normally in the Nether? I grew and harvested a Spruce last night in the Nether, but the leaf blocks did not disappear and when I took them out by hand, not a single sampling dropped (and Spruce have TONS of leaf blocks).
3. Can a Ghast fireball destroy a lava source block? I'm building a massive lava fall and I don't want those damned Ghasts mucking it up
I have seen the ghast shoot through lava and nothing happened. If you use the netherack to make a lava fall the ghast can destroy the netherrack but not the lava itself. When you break the leaves your less likely to get saplings. Never grew a tree in the nether so i dont know if it affects the leaves. Pigmen spawn randomly. I have gone through many fortresses that had no pigmen in them.
1.) Ghast? Cave ambience?
2.) They used to, but I cannot say for TU16.
3.) TNT can...but I don't know about Ghasts.
4.) If it's not Bedrock or a transparent block...Pigmen.
You get way more saplings by letting the leaves decay.
Actually... no. It's random and will average out to about the same (within acceptable mathematical limits). One of the YouTubers ran an experiment a long time ago. I have never tried growing a spruce in the nether, but I've frequently had spruce that did not drop any saplings. I've also had some spruce glitch out where some of the leaves just would not decay (usually the topmost ones).

You have living poop inside you??
But in all seriousness, I think the little girl idea is creepy, and doesn't really match. Maybe a bunch of long wind noises, or sizzles or fire noises. Something that would match the whole fire theme of the Nether

I get 3 times as many saplings from letting them decay. If i break the leaves im lucky to get 1 or 2. So i dont know what to tell you lol

You can find the experiments on YouTube. It's been tested a few times by different YouTubers. My personal experience is also that the number of drops are random whether or not I allow them to decay on their own or not and that the average works out about the same. I don't know why your experience would be so different; but if you think so, you can continue to just leave them decay if you want. Either way, I generally have more saplings than I can use in pretty short order anyways.

Maybe my bonemeal has special powers lol. Yeah the only tree that doesn't drop alot of saplings is the jungle tree.

The weird whimpering and cries are made by ghasts, so when you hear those keep an eye out for those fireballs! Also, you can only hear ghasts when they are really close, but they can fire at you pretty much from line of sight.
I'm not gonna quote anyone, but the leaves' rate of dropping item is not affected by what destroys the block (Fortune and Silk tools as well as shears excluded).
The saplings' drop rate comes from the block being destroyed, not by what destroys it.
Speculation != validity. It's in the code--same as growing sugar cane on sand/dirt/grass.

I've heard the ghast noises, usually that squawk before they shoot, but these sounds are something else, and only occur when you stand still. I usually hear them when I am safe from ghasts deep in my fortress. Me no likey

I remember a topic from months ago someone said they heard a lil girl crying but i think it was in a cave.

4. Is there any rhyme or reason to where Zombie Pigment will spawn? Are they more or less likely inside a Fortress?

You know who found that interesting?

I've also noticed that jungle trees don't drop many saplings. I'm lucky to get one per tree.
