Ok so I am fairly new to Minecraft (only been playing for a few months) and I have not been exploring much underground besides a mine to get my metals. Well yesterday I was starting a mine and I came across a mine shaft and blew one end with TNT and there was a door to a structure that was basically made out of stone blocks and mossy stone and had a bunch of chests throughout this place. What would that have been called? Stronghold? Thanks in advance for info, appreciate it.
Strongholds seem to be near spawn and by ravines. If you get eyes of ender and throw them in the air they will lead you to the end portal. There is a 50/50 chance that the eye will disappear though so its best to have alot of them.
Plus, most strongholds are pretty damn huge, so it will take some time to ferret out all of its secrets.
And then, there are always Abandoned Mines and Dungeons. So plenty to see and do under the dirt.
Most of the strongholds I've come across recently are missing quite a bit. For example, the most recent one I found did not have any libraries and had the chests missing. The pedestals in the halls where the chests should be were there, but the chests did not generate. It appears to be some sort of bug possibly, because a lot of hallways I've gone down in several of these strongholds end at a wall of stone with nothing behind it.
My current seed's Stronghold had one chest and it was in an odd room with a wood floor and ladder access and a weird hole in the center of the room. It also had only one library with the normal amount of chests. I have not located the second one yet, still looking in spots here and there, but a ravine cuts through a good 1/3 of it.
I've never had a stronghold that was not half destroyed by a cave system or ravine of some kind. On the one hand I had a lot of fun rebuilding my current stronghold, but I would also enjoy just purely exploring a complete Stronghold that didn't feature libraries without floors and doors that open to nowhere.

I had a stronghold with that same wooden floor and ladder. I think it was supposed to be a second library.
My stronghold has 2 libraries. One was normal and the other one was built over a ravine with lava at the bottom. I had to put in a temporary dirt floor just to pillage the place. Oddly, my stronghold chests have been terrible, while my temple chests & spawner chests have been great. Go figure. And I have not yet found any abandoned mineshafts in my world, even the one usually near my stronghold. I hope they're out there. I want the webs.

Not everything is 100% accurate (such as the horse armour), but it suffices.

Ikr? Even in creative, I can find the stronghold, but I've only found the portal ONCE. AND IN CREATIVE! I've explored so, so many strongholds before.
But yeah, I bet it was a stronghold.
