So I have an end portal in my house/castle and I want to have a bottomless pit so you can jump from 100 blocks above or step into the portal. But if you are high you die. This is on hard survival. Can I dig out the 40 blocks below the portal and get rid of the lava under it so I won't die and so you can see the portal from underneath? Not sure why I'm dieing but I was thinking it was the lava under the portal when you jump from real high.
If I get what you are saying correctly you want to jump from a high up and into the portal..
The problem with this is that when you go through the portal it preserves your momentum. Meaning, any fall damage you would take from a 100 block fall carries over to the next dimension. Even if you get rid of the lava you will still die because as soon as you touch the portal you are transported.
I'm pretty sure it's not the lava. In most of my worlds I usually get rid of the lava and a while back when I tried jump in from about ten blocks up I still took damage. The only logical solution would be to have water on the other side, BUT this would not work because every time you enter the end anything within the 5x5 obsidian platform is deleted when you enter the End.
It sounds cool what you are trying to do, but it's likely not possible.
Sidenote: The portal itself is invisible from underneath, but still gives off light.

Unsure if the following would work as I've never tried it, but...
A possible soloution would be putting a drop reset above the portal so that you can drop into the portal from any height safely. Unsure if you would need to install a floor under the portal for this to work or not. If you do need to install a floor it can be glass so that you can still see the portal from below.
Here is an example of a drop reset design that might work:
Wood = signs (to hold the water up)
Red wool = end portal
The only way to prevent damage from high point is what is mentioned above. A water drop. Having water held by signs near the bottom; usually 1-2 layers of water source blocks. They have to be source blocks, as that is what usually slows or negates damage from that point on.
It is just like jumping off a cliff into the ocean. the water must be at least 2 source blocks deep in order to suffer no damage. shallow 1 block deep water will not work. I think it works off that note.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
