Had a look through the bugs thread and it seems that the last entry was over a year ago so thought I would post this here. Not even sure if this is a glitch or a game mechanic, but I put carpet around my enchanting table in the space between the table and the book cases. When I try to enchant an item, the highest level enchantment available is level 2. When I get rid of the carpet, it allows full enchantment up to level 30. It appears that the carpet blocks the effect of the bookcases. Has anyone else had this issue?

It's not a bug.

The bookshelves require a full air block, meaning a block of nothing between the bookshelf and enchanting table. The carpets themselves do have a small hit box. Wolfeuk is correct this is what happens in the PC version as well.

It's the same thing as torches, flower pots, water, tall grass, Redstone dust, etc.--they all take up the block and as such, are "in the way."
