but if you go look at the forum and read the history of the tweets, 4J 'started' work on texture pack support in November. That was 10 months ago. Just think, maybe that's one of the reasons TU12 took so long was cause texture packs? Just a thought. Calm down guys,
I have a question that I haven't gotten answered, can you update the Xbox edition without having Xbox Live?
I don't believe so. You will need some sort of access to Xbox Live. This used to be covered by a Silver (free) account, but information about the Silver accounts has been taken down from the Microsoft Live website, so I'm not sure whether the Silver account or a similar free account is still available or whether you have to shell out for a Gold account to get updates.

Unless they changed it very recently, like within the last week or so, all you need is silver/free for game patches.

Would you please check out to see if you can find where the Silver accounts are still being offered on the XBox Live website? I can't locate it anymore.

Silver does not pay for game updates and they do get them when gold members get them. If you connect to Xbox live when you set up your gamertag, you already get an xbox live silver account. They are free, and what you have when you don't pay for gold (currently me).
I also just signed up a new gamertag for silver here less then a month ago.

So, if I understand you correctly, although the info on the website has essentially disappeared, they are still available when you sign up through your Xbox. Thanks for clarifying that.

No problem, and yes they are available, though they don't really say/clarify. As long as your xbox is hooked up to the internet, you have a silver account when you make your gamertag.
As far as I know they haven't removed any of the features from silver accounts. I know you still can't play multiplayer, still can't join party chats (but can private chat with one person), use apps, music, or movies. Pretty much you can play games, and buy from the market place.

Yes, you can, but i believe it has to be the XBox used to buy that copy of Minecraft. Otherwise, you will need a LIVE (silver/gold) account to update. You just need your XBox to have an internet connection. Simply start up MC on the XBox when TU12 is released and it will tell you there is an update for it. (Source: My seven year old niece has a non-LIVE account on our XBox and is the one who installed the TU11 update. )

Silver accounts are XBox LIVE accounts that don't buy gold memberships. Once you sign up for XBox LIVE, you're a silver account. You then need to buy a gold membership, if you want one, but will return to silver when/if your gold ever runs out.
To update an Arcade title, you have to have a LIVE account signed into the XBox if the title wasn't purchased on that XBox. If an Arcade title was purchased by your XBox, any account on the XBox can update that game regardless of the account type (gold, silver, or non-LIVE) as long as you have an internet connection.

EDIT: Sorry if i repeated any other replies.
One possible difference that I see is that prior to the disc version, you basically needed some sort of Live account in order to download the game in the first place. With the disc, there is no Xbox on which the game was purchased, so I would think then that either you would need at least a Silver account set up on whatever Xbox you're wanting to download the updates onto or that . unless, of the disc itself automatically triggers an update process on whatever Xbox it's put into. Personally, my son has always had an Xbox Live account, so we really don't know what happens with updating games on disc without one.

It is the same as if you load the game from your hard drive. As long as the xbox is connected to the internet, it will have a silver account. If it was never connected online, then the game will not update.
My cousin has never connected her xbox online. She has a profile, but it's not a real "gamertag". The profile acts like a gamertag though. All her achievements and things are saved to that "profile". If she were to hook it up to the internet, it will run her through setting up her gamertag if her profile name was taken. If not, it will convert the profile to a gamertag.

No worries. All disc games wll update automatically as long as an internet connection is present regardless of the type of account using the disc. I only know this for sure because we have all different types of accounts on our XBox.

You're right up until the part i made bold text. Our Xbox has a constant internet connection, but my nieces (or anyone else) have never had to create a LIVE account with their profiles on our XBox. Creating a LIVE account, whether silver or gold, requires choosing a gamertag, creating a password, and using an email address to associate with the gamertag. Profiles/accounts on an XBox without a LIVE account are what i call "non-LIVE"; they're simply user profiles on the XBox. (Think about the guest account... it's not a LIVE account.) Also, when adding a LIVE account/gamertag, you generally have to download that profile to the XBox. I've never seen on our XBox where you can create a LIVE account, although, i admit, now that i've written all this, that option may actually be there. Now, your XBox may be different if it's an older one, but ours isn't even a year old yet and this is how it works in regards to user profiles (non-LIVE accounts) and gamertags (LIVE accounts).

Like I stated above, her xbox has never been online, nor does it have an xbox live account attached to her machine. When I set up my xbox, we have the old / non slim consoles. So maybe that does have something to do with it. I do know that your xbox can't be connected online without at least one live account. When I set my xbox up for the first time, my "profile" was my name. When I connected it ran through the "logging into xbox live" after i connected the cable, and it ran me through setting up my gamertag / live account. It would not let me proceed with anything else at that point.
I didn't say all "profiles" will convert to gamertags, I just said her profile would convert if she ever connected her xbox to the internet.

My apologies for offending. I'm so used to the regular traffic around here, that i forgot there would be people who don't have to share. Best regards.

Forum AdminI certainly didn't mean to imply every profile either when making my original post.
Thank you both for this very informative exchange. I've learned a lot this morning.
*steps back* uh, this could get messy. let me go get my rain coat
Taking a look at the screen shot I immediately noticed the heads and the chiseled stone blocks. And is that carpet?
Edit:
Oh schnikies, is that a wither-skeleton head?
