I've seen the screenshot, I think the resolution on the picture is a little low, so the regular sandstone stairs appear smooth, so people think their coming. I could be wrong.
I thought so too at first, but no, there are some Smooth Sandstone Stairs right near the front which are very visible. Look behind the Tall Grass next to the Cow, in the foreground, and next to the Pig near the Cow. Compare those to pictures of existing Sandstone Stairs, and you can tell they're definitely a new block. Especially the ones near the Pig, as you can see those from the back of the stairs and see it's a basically flat / smooth texture pattern.
I've got to say, smooth sandstone stairs has to be the lamest "exclusive" anything I can think of from the entire history of the gaming medium.
... Sandstone variant, no.
My thoughts exactly. We already had sandstone stairs. Why not add something ya know, different instead of a very minor variation? I'm sure that I'll barely ever use these super awesome mega epic cool exclusive stairs.
Aaaaaw bummer. Really thought we'd be getting some more information on TU31 today or tomorrow at least, but this isn't half bad at all. Just means more work for 4J. Poor guys.

It could in a way be a hint of we the update might roll out? If WiiU is going to be releasing with the same features as the rest of the consoles, and those are the 1.7/1.8 features of t PC platform, then we might have the update on Dec. 17 or Dec 18th

That's a good theory, but nothing in the screenshot appears to be from 1.8. The block in his hand could be but it's too overexposed to be able to tell what it is. That would fit the time frame most people are expecting, though.

This actually makes me very happy and excited. I haven't played MC for awhile now because it got boring, I really needed new blocks, biomes, and stuff yay!
" @4JStudios seems to have a missed a block in the forums change log "
4J Studios then replies:
" That feature was a bug, not a feature "
So what does this means? Yes, these smooth sandtone stairs were a bug, and we won't be getting any exclusive features at all, it seems.
Well that's unfortunate..I was hoping the lack of Smooth Sandstone Stairs on the Changelog might possibly mean Banners were being included too, just not on the Changelog. But I'm still very grateful to have this on console edition soon, especially Slime Blocks.
Can anyone make an educated guess as to about how long it might be until the update is ready? I have no idea how long final testing takes. I know 360 sometimes gets updates earlier, but the last update (with horses, etc) was only a matter of hours apart between 360 and PS3.

I'll try and put this the simpliest way I can:
When this game reaches cert testing phase, Microsoft and Sony will test the game and try to report and fix any major bug so that the game doesn't break when the update is launched, and seeing how it's already on that phase since Dec. 9th, it will take both enterprises 7 to 10 business days to finish cert testing and finally launch the TU (basically they will test the game on every day of the week except for saturday and sunday). So I presume this TU will arrive on Dec. 17th or 18th.
And I really need this update to finish my Creative map I've been working on over a year now, because according to the changelog, it has all the many features I need, so I might spend a day or two working on my map once this update arrives.

There was a youtuber whom explain the cert testing process awhile back when there was an update that dropped earlier on xbox than playstation.
I think the yourtuber was ibxtoycat, and I think he addressed it in a QnA video around the time of minecon. From what I remember the Playstation folks have three separate testing teams and so their testing can take more time than the xbox team to certify. Furthermore, if I recall they try to hold the launch until all platforms have been tested and certified, to achieve a simultaneous launch.
The testing itself as mentioned will be to fined and solve any potential game breaking errors, so in a best case scenario certification could be a few days, but if there are some big issues, it might be pushed back to 4J to solve, which could result in a delay (weeks?).
At the end of the day, an update is coming, and it looks like a pretty good update based on the features announced, let's now start to focus on the next big update lol!

Ahh I see, thanks. Maybe the popular prediction of December 18th (1.8 on the 18th) will come true after all. Just as well that it's after my finals end I guess, less distraction

Don't kid yourself, no company is going to 'hold' a product till another company is ready. Especially when it comes to Microsoft and Sony. You can bet that as soon as said product has been confirmed not to cause any issues with said console that it would be rushed to the public ASAP, and it makes good business sense as the following of the opposite side will be in an uproar due to they want their product as well, and any youtuber whom says different is well full of it. This type of move can swing users to and from said consoles. I can pretty much guarantee that both sides are pushing hard to get this product to their consumers before the other.
This can easily be proven with the last major tidal update, Microsoft pushed it out the door first, and Sony went on holidays, when they returned they had quite a few angry consumers, some of which swore they were selling their console and switching, if they did or not is irrelevant as the whole point was it caused Sony to look bad in front of their audience.
So rest assured that as soon as its confirmed OK, it'll be pushed to the public pronto by either side.

... unless, of course, they all signed a contract agreeing to simultaneous releases.

The last major title (not tidal lol) update was the one with donkeys and horses and stained glass, and there was only a matter of hours between Microsoft and Sony.

True, but I bet thats highly unlikely as Microsoft help 4J with the project from the get go from both tech standpoints to aquiring the IP from Mojang way back, and now that Microsoft pretty much owns the IP, i highly doubt that any such contract exists.

I don't recall the exact update, but I know that either the PS3/PS4 didn't get it like others did, it took another 3 days or so for it to get to them. I remember reading a lot of bash remarks, it was rather nasty for awhile, didn't help that their was a lot of fanboys fueling the fire during those few days.
Anyhow getting off topic, point is neither Microsoft nor Sony are going to hold back their release, even thou minecraft doesn't have the following that it once had it still carries quite a bit of weight, and I'm even going to say that they probably have the game update on the top priority list.

Yeah, I agree... I just couldn't resist throwing that in there, though.

Stay fluffy~
Just checked 4J's Twitter. Guess what, a fuzzy banner!
I think it is for the WiiU release info they just posted on their twitter. Well a screenshot of Minecraft on a WiiU console.

More hype for today's lunch, straight from 4J Studios' Twitter:
"
" We've handed over the update to Microsoft & Sony for final test!
The change list will take a while to write - it will be posted tomorrow
Go check the new changelog as well if you don't mind.
This actually makes me very happy and excited. I haven't played MC for awhile now because it got boring, I really needed new blocks, biomes, and stuff yay!
Also for those who are curious:
