Where's a good spot to erect a Nether Portal that gives quick easy access to the Nether Fortress?
Ground level. So you don't end up under the lava lake or high above where you have to watch your dig downward... Well usually, but not a guarantee. After all each seed is different in where the fortress actually is. But placing the portal on ground level at least lands you near the Y coordinate. The xz will vary with the seed. Sometimes it can be in a corner and sometimes middle or even just along one edge.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Where's a good spot to erect a Nether Portal that gives quick easy access to the Nether Fortress?
Go into the nether with material to build a nether portal... find the fortress, build the portal on the inside where you want it, then leave. If you are far enough away (over 128 blocks away) from your original spawned portal in the nether, it should spawn a new portal in the overworld at a relatively optimal X/Z location. You should be able to move this vertically in the Y direction and still have them link to each other... but I'm not sure if the bug was fixed where a nether portal built above Y=127 would not link back from the nether... this might have been since patched.... if not, it is (or was) an interesting way to 'make' obsidian...
If the second portal does link to your original overworld portal on the way back, just destroy the first portal that spawned in the Nether and you should be good to go.
There is also a mathematical map conversion that is optimal... but a lot of people don't like to have to deal with the math part. (Nether X/Z coordinates multiplied by 8 on PC, or 3 on XBox360, to get the respective optimal overworld location or take the overworld X/Z coordinates divided by 8 on PC, or 3 on XBox360, to get the optimal nether equivalent).

oh yeah lol i would always unintentionally make those and just horde all the obsidian. i think it still happens though.

Ahh small mistake, its divided by 3, on 360 and ps3 consoles. I haven't done any work on the xbox one to know if there is a difference but I'm sure it has. Basically you need the 'scale' of the map, the overworld on 360/ps3 is 3x bigger then the neither. I don't think the neither got a increase on xbox one/ps4, so you need to take the scale of your overworld (small/medium/large) to the neither size, and get a scale factor, perhaps this weekend I'll have time to work these out.
The Y cord plays little roll in portals, with the except of where it 'starts' looking, but all Y will be examined first at given x,z.

Thanks for the correction... I made the correction in my original post... I forgot about the range difference between XB360 console and the Java version.
Hey no worries, i've made the same mistake when playing the game and attempting to get portals aligned perfectly, after an hour or two of frustration I finally figured out my mistake and did a few face palms to say the least.
Its a copy of the 4J studios logo, under it it says '4J Studios', can't make out any other text to look at. I also believe the static, is symbolizing the way old TV used to work, IE when a channel went off air for the night, nothing could be seen but static, thus this could be referencing that they are on holidays, or experiencing technical difficulties.

yah I figured it was a hint they did that last time hid a message behind the static.
Well they aren't on holidays yet, just released another skin pack for PS3 birthday, however I'm reluctant to believe that we will get TU 19 before Christmas. It would have to go to cert within the next day or two to make it to us by then, or already be in cert testing.
They use the fuzzy banner before they announce anything.
Now that Microsoft has bought minecraft, maybe they won't announce cert testing and it just be a part of the process they do now.... just a guess
Technically, Microsoft bought Mojang AB and the development rights to the core Minecraft game system as issued by Mojang, 4J Studios is still handling the console conversions and is not necessarily under any different processes than before just because Microsoft bought the originating development company and the rights to the Java version.
Actually in respects to the PC version, Microsoft can do as they wish, but doing so would **** ALOT of people off. Microsoft most likely will sit on the sidelines, study and analyze how the company grew into what it was, and perhaps prepare for a MC 2. They also have access now to a HUGE audience and may inject some advertising or something.
I believe that they won't really do much with the property for awhile, as they can't risk the attention that would come from alienating millions upon millions, especially when so many of them are future consumers, and as we all know children are highly impressionable and we know that should Microsoft alienate the more famous minecrafters with powerful youtube channels like etho, docm, zipcrowd, ect that they will turn those children against Microsoft. Children also have a way of getting friends, and parents involved, and this could be very bad for Microsoft.
Point is Microsoft could do as they wish with the property, but they won't. Microsoft also don't own the code for the console versions, that's owned by 4J, which I imagine is licensed. I could see Microsoft flexing their mussels a bit to get the Xbox version as a 'first', which we are seeing quite often, but I doubt they will go much farther then that.
even then, Microsoft can't do anything. Mojang said themselves. All the current workers are just working for Microsoft, but Microsoft doesn't have control over the in-game content. They probably are only able to control the release dates for packs and updates.
do you mean texture/resource packs? I don't think microsoft has a say in that at all because they are made by completely random people around the world.
edit- if you meant the xbox then i doubt microsoft has a say on what 4J does at all as long as what they do meets the standards of having texture packs. they haven't even bought xbox version yet.

I'm not so sure about that, for starters Minecraft for the Xbox was an initiative started by Microsoft with Mojang, then Mojang hired (outsourced) 4J to do the coding. I'm pretty sure all rights belong to Mojang. Then again software engineering is wierd. I'm pretty sure 4J reports back to Mojang though.
That is only partially correct, Microsoft made a deal with Mojang, and that deal was to have it as an exclusive for a period of time. Mojang did not hire 4J, nor did Microsoft. 4J started the ball rolling themselves, they knew that the popular indie game would be a hit on the console, they contacted Microsoft, whom took it a step further and locked in a deal with Mojang.
Do you honestly think that Microsoft if they owned the code would allow such a popular game on the enemy's consoles? Hell no they would have kept it as an exclusive. It was one of their first responses after acquiring Mojang studios, in that they would allow the development on sony platforms (at least for now), or something similar.

I say just go with the middle of the map.
Stay fluffy~
