I liked the old lighting system. I always used the sun and moon positions to tell me if its sunrise, sunset, or if its noon. I cannot tell anymore and(quickly) I already got killed because I though it was noon when it was really sunset. Glowstone is black, trees are black, glass is black from a distance, cobblestone is brown, white wool is tinted brownish yellow, nothing good came out of this update, not even the pistons(freezes game).
You could always make a clock. I like the lighting except for white that does show a yellow tinge. Personally, I do think the switching between yellow and blue lights in the new system does show you the sunlight and moonlight phases.
