OP, animals will die from suffocation in walls now. Since the last 2-3 updates, so your cows may have died. If there is no walls near them then I don't know why they are gone. They should not despawn though, especially with that many cows in a small pen. It has been stated that mobs will not despawn if they cannot move more than 20 blocks in any direction.
Yeah it seems many people are experiencing this. I had to use fences instead of just using walls to detain them. Even then they died, they get up on-top the fences sometimes and suffocate in the ceiling so I had to also make the ceiling higher. They are fine now, no deaths yet which is good as this my first real survival world im putting dedication into. I have goals and achievements i want to finish. Good thing I fixed the other animals pens. Because one of my goals was to have one sheep each have a dye-able color. I got all colors, hooray. As for my chickens... I have a coop and it's not working so well so I have to fix that too...what a pain.
Only use wood fences to keep animals in. They are suffocating in walls. Dont use cobble fence either.
It has nothing to do with the fences or walls... It is due to the fact the hit boxes dont reset on the new babys when they grow up... This means that when a cow grows up it still has the baby cow hitbox which allows it to get places it shouldnt and suffocate... The only way currently to get around this when the animals grow up is to Save and Exit the game and then Reload your save once they grow up... This goes for all passive mobs when breeding including villagers... When you save and exit the game it resets the hitboxes to what they should be so this does not happen...
i have every animal in a fence and fences in the corners and none of my animals die whether babies or not. They wont suffocate in a fence. They will only try to jump out but to stop that you just make the fences 2 high and put half slabs over the top.The animals try to escape in the corners. Has nothing to do with hit boxes. I have had other farms with walls and all the adult cows suffocated in the corners.
