Hi,
I'm new to the forums, have been mining since day one on XBOX. Recently I ran across a new problem. On my world, Seed is -361099400 down in the SE corner theres a mountain and seaside cliff area. My problem is the animals (pigs/cows/sheep/ducks) spawn as fast as you can kill them. I have set up farms in other places, but can't breed any animals because it continuously says that I have reached the max number of breeding animals for the world. (I only have 2 sheep in the pens and nothing else) So I went around the world killing all the animals I could find but when I get back to the farm area, it says the same thing. So I opened the seed up as a new world and flew around killing the animals. When I get to this corner of the map, I can circle arount the mountail killing everything in sight. before I can make it around the mountain the animals have re-spawned. Has anyone ever run into this type of situation and if so, what causes it and is there any way to stop it. I have done a lot of work already building a large city in the desert area, and wanted to make some of the NPC villages as farm land to raise crops and animals and in that corner I already have something else going and it is too far from my city anyway for the purpose. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm having a similar problem with not being able to breed animals. The bigger issue I have is there happens to be very few animals in my world besides the three fenced cows owned by another user. We're stuck with eating potatoes and carrots as our main food source because we can't find cows, pigs or chickens.
The issue is not how many animals are spawning, but how many animals are in situations where they cannot move 20 or more blocks and, therefore, cannot despawn on their own. If you sculpt the landscape such that there are very few places where wild animals can get trapped, you won't have a problem as the game will despawn the wild ones as needed.
Also, what happens on a far corner of the map only affects what is going on in your corner IF you or someone has visited that corner during that session. If you spawn in your base when you load the game and never go to that corner of the map during that session, the animals there are not loaded into memory and they do not get counted towards the limits. (I have personally tested this many times on superflat worlds and others have confirmed it as well.) Once you visit that corner of the map, that area stays in memory until you leave the session and the animals there that cannot despawn on their own will then count towards the farming limit.
Your real issue may be trapped animals nearer to your home base.
That's what Niah is running into. There are animals trapped somewhere, in a cave or on the edges of hills that are not despawning and counting toward the limit. I had this problem big time with what I called "Animal Mountain" in my seed. Problem was, a lived under that mountain, so restarting never solved the problem as long as I was based there.
But should they re-spawn that quickly? I can kill everything on one side of the mountain, fly upward until I am even with the top and sit there and watch them re-spawn 2-3 at a time right below me, all within 15 seconds of having killed everything. I finally got a couple more sheep in the pen, but no cows. I tried what you said, I exited the game standing in the pen, went in the following time and was able to put in 5 sheep before it said limit was reached. there are no caves in the area I am at, unless the animals are spawning underground, it is desert bordering flat grassland. Does anyone know what the world limit is for animals on the xbox version?

In what update was your world created? Sometimes biome shift after updates causes the spawning of wild animals to become mismatched to the terrain. For example, IF lets say the last update changed how your seed would generate from, say, lots of jungle to lots of ocean biome, the spawning of wild animals would drop considerably... since animals don't spawn in ocean biomes. So, even if the world still looks like a jungle, it will behave like an ocean. If that little corner of your map now thinks it's surrounded by ocean and it's a plain, animals will spawn on that plain at a fierce rate because the game is not spawning animals in what it now thinks is the adjacent ocean.
There is no fix for biome shift (either on the Xbox or even on the PC)... other than starting a world that is current to the current update... or just living with biomes that don't behave (as far as weather and spawning goes) in accordance with how the terrain looks..
Just an update. I went around all the mountains and ravines and found a lot of animals trapped on the edge of cliffs. After killing them it spawned them back into the typical places you would find animals. Thanks
I think 4J has the spawn rates on animals set higher to compensate for the fact that there's a much lower mob cap and breeding cap than there is on the PC version.
I encounter this problem a lot too, as there is a mountain range near the village I am building up. Try hunting at night, animals require light and grass to spawn on. I notice I get the occasional spawn-in-the-dark with animals here and there, but for the most part, I'm sure you'll notice your pruning will be more effective at night.
If you stay away from that area for long periods of time, the animals trapped on the cliffs will eventually start despawning. Same as spending long periods of time away from your pens can cause you to lose some.
